Rain alert: Karnataka coastal districts to close schools for 2 days

The deputy commissioners of two coastal Karnataka districts have urged college and school administrations to declare holidays anticipating heavy rain.

Dakshina Kannada and Udupi deputy commissioner have directed college and school administrations to declare holidays for 5 and 6 July.

With a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) amid heavy rain in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada in coastal Karnataka for the last 48 hours, the deputy commissioners of both districts have announced the closure of educational institutes on 5 and 6 July.

Dakshina Kannada’s KV Rajendra and his Udupi’s M Kurma Rao have directed the college and school administrations to declare holidays for both days.

“Citing the heavy rainfall in the district and a red alert by the IMD, we have issued a directive to close educational constitutions,” Rajendra told South First.

Rain lashes coastal Karnataka

The incessant rain for the last few hours has affected normal life in the two coastal districts of Karnataka.

Landslides have been reported at various locations in the two districts.

According to an officer at Dakshina Kannada headquarters, long traffic queues were witnessed on NH275 between Mangaluru and Madikeri due to a landslide.

The officer added that landslides were also reported at Anmod Ghat.

According to reports, a school and Anganwadi centre in Mangaluru were flooded due to the Tuesday downpour.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in coastal Karnataka in the coming days.

Officials of the IMD have asked fishermen not to venture into the sea, and people staying near the coasts have been asked to shift to higher areas.

People of the coastal districts have been asked not to come out of their houses for the next few days.

What lies ahead?

The IMD has also forecast moderate to heavy rainfall in the Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Shivamogga, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, Dakshina Kannada, and Kodagu districts.

According to the IMD, rainfall intensity is projected to recede by 10 July.

According to a tweet by the Karnataka Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), coastal Karnataka districts will receive moderate to very heavy rain.

The tweet also read, “Moderate rains with isolated heavy rains likely over Malnad districts & scattered-widespread very light-moderate rains likely over NIK and SIK. [sic]”
