The northeast monsoon has set in over Kerala even as Tamil Nadu received a respite from pounding thundershowers. Andhra Pradesh is predicted to receive heavy rains on Wednesday. As heavy rains continue in parts of Karnataka, Kerala is witnessing swell surge.
Chennai was limping back to normal on Wednesday, 16 October, as rains paused. The IMD has predicted light showers at several places on Wednesday, even as schools and colleges remained closed as a precautionary measure. Schools will remain closed in Bengaluru too.
Rain-battered regions in the South are now dealing with the aftermath.
Traffic police associated with the Avadi Police Commissionerate have been involved in repairing the rain-damaged roads near Poonamallee at the Thirumazhisai junction.

Even as heavy rains continued to flood homes in Bengaluru, Karnataka Dy CM DK Shivakumar asked that people do not curse the city for flooding issues.

The low-pressure that brought heavy rains to Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, 15 October led to several roads in Chennai to be flooded.
Several roads including subways were waterlogged due to the rains. The Greater Chennai Corporation shared 'before' and 'after' images of a flooded road in Valasaravakkam Zone to establish that they had been working hard to pump out water with the help of motor pumps.

Officials are conducting a special medical camp at the Velammal High School, situated in Thiruvetriyur's KCP Stop Colony. With the camp, the DMK government in Tamil Nadu aims to ensure that people affected by the Chennai rains are looked after.

The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a red alert for Kerala against the possibility of strong waves and the Kallakadal (Swell Surge) phenomenon.
INCOIS has informed that there is a possibility of a 1.0 to 2.0-meter high wave and rough sea phenomenon on the Kerala coast.
Special caution is required in the following areas:
Third cyclone warning signals were hoisted at Krishnapatnam, Nizampatnam, and Machilipatnam seaports in Andhra Pradesh.
On the other hand, APSRTC suspended its bus services on certain routes in Chittoor district after receipt of information that water has been overflowing causeways and bridges at several places.

Continuous heavy rainfall in Bengaluru has left several localities and roads waterlogged, causing significant disruptions to daily life.
On Wednesday, areas like Shirdi Saibaba Layout in the East Zone were particularly affected, with houses and roads flooded after two days of relentless downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, in effect until 17 October.

The temple in Pattalam near Nainaappan Street is flooded, and residents are struggling to move out.
Nearby areas are also severely affected as people face difficulties identifying potholes hidden beneath the water.

Orange Alert on 16 October for Malappuram, and Kannur: Very heavy rainfall of 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm is expected in the next 24 hours; Heavy rainfall in isolated places.
Yellow alert on 16 October for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kasaragod

For all the districts with yellow alerts, there are chances of isolated heavy rain of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Thunderstorms are also expected.

BBMP Commissioner Tushar Girinath visited the flood-affected areas including Manyata Tech Park in the Yelahanka zone on Wednesday morning.
Incessant rainfall has resulted in water logging in several places in Manyata Tech Park in Hebbal. Earlier in the day, the under-construction site collapsed in the same tech park.
Yelahanka zone recorded an average rainfall of 77.87mm on Tuesday, resulting in flooding in several areas and main junctions.

On behalf of the Chennai Corporation, lunch is being prepared at the Kodambakkam Community Centre for those in need. On Wednesday, over 4,009 people have already received breakfast.

IMD Met Centre Amaravati has placed 6 districts Prakasam, YSR Kadapa, SPSR Nellore, Annamayya, Tirupati, and Chittoor, under Orange Alert on 16 October.
The same districts will be on Red alert on 17 October alongside Anantapuramu, Sri Sathya Sai, and Bapatla districts on Orange Alert.
Rainwater in most parts of the Koyambedu market area has been cleared, with only a few spots still facing drainage issues. Vegetable and fruit trading has resumed, and prices have dropped by ₹20 per kg compared to yesterday's rates.

Incidents of houses getting inundated due to the Kallakadal (Swell surge) phenomenon were reported from Thiruvananthapuram's Poonthura and Pozhiyoor as well as Alappuzha's Ambalapuzha.
Kallakadal or swell surge are flash-flood events that take place without any noticeable advance change in local winds or any other apparent signature in the coastal environment.
Authorities said that some fisher families were asked to move to safer places and they are closely monitoring the situation.
Drones capable of carrying up to 10kg of medicines, water, and essential supplies are on standby in Chennai and will be deployed to assist people stuck on top floors or terraces in hard-to-reach areas due to flooding, if need be.

Nellore and Tirupati received heavy rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, 16 October.
The IMD said Kavali in Nellore received 18 cm of rain, while Nellore got 13 cms. Tirupati's Tada received 12 cm of rain in the reporting 24 hours.

The Bengaluru traffic police have issued an advisory due to waterlogging affecting several areas.
Police said motorists should expect slow-moving traffic at Palace Cross Junction heading towards 1st Main Road in Seshadripuram, as well as at Kogila Cross towards Hegde Nagar.
Additionally, congestion is reported at the Madiwala Ayyappa Underpass leading towards Madiwala Police Station.
Drivers are also advised to exercise caution at the Devinagar railway bridge while approaching the Outer Ring Road, where water accumulation has been noted.
Police urged all commuters to plan their routes accordingly and remain vigilant while navigating these impacted areas.
The wall of a house collapsed at Honnuru in Karnataka's Chamarajnagar district in heavy rain, destroying household items.

The depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kmph during the past six hours and lay centered over the same region about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 390 km east of Puducherry and 450 km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh), at 5.30 am on Wednesday, 16 October.
It is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu - South Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Nellore, close to Chennai, early morning on Thursday, 17 October.
