The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, 11 December, issued an intense weather warning in the Puducherry region till 13 December, where heavy rains are expected.

At around 7 am on Wednesday, the coastal city received heavy rainfall, which lasted nearly an hour. Heavy rain was also reported at several locations in Tamil Nadu.

Areas such as Auroville, Puthurai, Vanur, and nearby villages along the Puducherry-Tindivanam road experienced significant downpours. Coastal regions, including Kalapet, Solainagar, Ariyankuppam, and Nallavadu, also saw substantial rainfall, as did other localities like Bahour, Thirubuvanai, Oussudu, and Villianur.

Urban areas such as Lawspet, Raj Bhavan, Mudaliarpet, and Kurimedu were similarly affected.

The weather system has caused waterlogging in many parts of the region, with roads, already damaged by potholes, facing severe disruptions. Motorists are encountering significant difficulties due to the flooding.

Tamil Nadu braces for rain

The IMD issued forecasts for heavy rain across 17 districts in Tamil Nadu, attributing this to an upper atmospheric circulation over northern Tamil Nadu.

In addition, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is expected in most parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Wednesday.

Heavy rains have also been reported in the Ponneri region and its surrounding areas, including Gummidipoondi, Pazhaverkadu, Cholavaram, Chengunram, Minjur, Periyapalayam, and Uthukottai.

In Ponneri, waterlogging has worsened the already deteriorating roads, creating major challenges for commuters. Furthermore, the lack of proper drainage near the Government Boys Higher Secondary School has caused rainwater to flood the school premises, creating distress for students.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Tamil Nadu has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall on 11 December in districts including Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai.

A yellow alert has been issued for isolated areas in districts such as Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villuppuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, and Tiruvallur.

The weather department has forecasted rains to continue in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal until 16 December, with some areas likely to experience very heavy rainfall on 11 and 12 December

Residents in these regions are urged to take precautions as the heavy rains are expected to cause widespread disruptions over the coming days.

IMD also predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh Yanam and Rayalaseema on 11 and 12 December and very likely chances of heavy rainfall at isolated places in South interior Karnataka on 12 December.
