Rahul Gandhi files nomination, says he treats people of Wayanad like he treats sister Priyanka

Rahul Gandhi took out a roadshow ahead of filing his nomination papers before District Collector Dr Renu Raj.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, 3 April, said that he is always with the people of Wayanad on all issues, including the human-animal conflict that has claimed many lives in the hilly district.

He filed his nomination to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Wayanad constituency before District Collector Dr Renu Raj.

The sitting MP also said he was always ready to bring the issues faced by the people of the hill constituency to the attention of the nation and the world.

Gandhi was speaking to the thousands, including party workers and supporters, who were part of his roadshow held at Kalpetta in Wayanad ahead of filing the nomination.

The former AICC president will be contesting against BJP state president K Surendran and CPI leader Annie Raja. He had won from the same seat in 2019 with a massive margin of over four lakh votes.

Annie Raja filed her nomination earlier in the day, preceded by a roadshow.

‘Wayanad is my home’

Gandhi said that Wayanad was his home, the people his family, and the land, with its beautiful history and traditions, his “guiding light”.

“I am deeply grateful to the people of Wayanad for their unwavering support. As we step into a new era of Nyay (justice), I want to reaffirm my dedication to serving each and every one of you to the best of my abilities,” he said.

Thousands of people, including UDF leaders and workers, turned up at Kalpetta to welcome Gandhi.

Accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Gandhi took out a roadshow from Kalpetta to Civil Station.

People across all age groups carried party flags and placards with the Congress MP’s photograph and balloons in party colours and gathered on the roadsides to welcome him.

“I have received affection from all families (in Wayanad). I have learned so much from my brothers and sisters. It has been an honour for me to be a member of Parliament (representing Wayanad),” he said

‘I treat Wayanad like my little sister’

“I don’t treat you or think of you as an electorate. I think of you and treat you the same way I treat my little sister Priyanka over here,” he added.

“So in the houses of Wayanad, I have sisters, mothers, fathers and brothers. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for that,” the Congress leader said.

AICC General Secretary KC. Venugopal, Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan, KPCC acting president MM Hassan, Muslim League national general secretary PΚ Kunhalikutty, KPCC campaign committee president Ramesh Chennithala, Youth Congress national president BV Srinivas, youth leader Kanhaiya Kumar, Kerala Congress leader Mons Joseph, Kalpatta MLA T Siddique and others joined Gandhi on the open vehicle.

Venugopal translated his speech from English to Malayalam.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Gandhi won 7,06,367 votes out the total 10,92,197 with his closest rival — CPI’s PP Suneer — received only 2,74,597 votes.

Voting in Kerala for the Lok Sabha polls will be on 26 April.
