In what could be a game-changer for Punjab’s tourism industry, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Monday, 11 September, that Amritsar would be developed as a destination wedding centre.

The state government is expected to set up a world-class “celebration point” over 100 acres in the city, with marriage palaces, banquet halls and hotels, with the tariff reportedly starting from ₹25,000 and going up to ₹10 lakh. There would also be three-star and four-star hotels.

The declaration was made by Mann at the first Punjab Tourism Summit, inaugurated at Amity University in Mohali.

‘Immense tourism potential’

Mann reached the venue along with comedian Kapil Sharma and elicited a huge applause.

“Punjab has immense tourism potential, which was never paid attention to or harnessed earlier. We will make tourism more specialised now,” said Mann at the event.

“Amritsar will be developed as a wedding destination for both NRIs and people from other states. There will be banquet halls and hotels in celebration points to suit every pocket,” he said.

“Those who want their children to get married and seek blessings from Golden Temple the same day could book any of these banquet halls and hotels and organise the event there,” added Mann.

Other plans

The chief minister also called on tourists and the hospitality industry to mine the potential of Chamrour in Pathankot.

He said there was a lake spanning 57 km, and no other place had such blue waters. “This is an untouched tourist destination and we need to reap it,” said Mann.

The AAP leader also announced the setting up of a world-class film city, and asked Kapil Sharma to help promote it.

Calling the summit a non-political event aimed at the development of Punjab, Mann said that developing tourism in the state inclusively had always been on the government’s priority list owing to its geographical location and religious importance.

“Punjab is not just about agriculture fields. Our tourism potential is unparalleled,” he noted.

“More than 1 lakh people pay obeisance at Golden Temple daily. More than 12,000 villages have their own martyrs’ list. We have a unique popular culture and cuisine celebrated across the world. So why not get people here to experience the same?” asked Mann.

He also called on investors to put their faith in the state, promising the best ease of doing business.
