Private college seals Telangana government medical college over unpaid rent; students left stranded

Synopsis: A private college in Telangana’s Ranga Reddy district sealed the premises of Maheshwaram Government Medical College on 29 April over unpaid rent, leaving students stranded outside. Although the issue was quickly resolved according to the college principal, students and faculty had previously flagged serious deficiencies in facilities. The incident drew sharp criticism from opposition BRS, who blamed the Congress-led state government for administrative failure and demanded accountability.

The management of Bharat Institute of Engineering and Technology, which had leased its premises to the newly established Maheshwaram Government Medical College, said it took the step after repeated demands for pending rent payments were ignored.

The government college, launched for the 2024-25 academic year with 50 seats, was part of  the ‘one medical college per district’ policy under the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government.

Following the closure, Maheshwaram Government Medical College Principal Dr B Triveni told South First that the issue had been resolved quickly.

“There was a small issue that got resolved immediately. So we had the classes and all that stuff, we had all the regular college proceedings. There was a subtle misunderstanding,” she said.

However, students and faculty raised concerns about poor infrastructure at the college even before the lockout, pointing to the absence of basic facilities.

Maheshwaram Government Medical College is attached to Area Hospital Vanasthalipuram, which also lacks the facilities required to run a medical college.

The college has permission to admit 50 students per year for two years, with further approvals subject to the necessary infrastructure being made available.

‘Reflection of Congress administration’

The college was sanctioned ₹176 crore as part of the former BRS administration’s efforts to expand access to medical education across Telangana, led by then chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR).

BRS MLA and former Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy criticised the Congress-led state government over the incident, accusing it of administrative failure.

“Is this what you call governance? Is this the reflection of your administration, Telangana Chief Minister’s Office?” she asked in a post on X.

“The previous government brought healthcare and medical education closer to the people; the current Congress government is riddling it with holes.”

Reddy further demanded justice for the affected students.
