Police constable killed by red sandlwood smugglers in Andhra Pradesh

Following the incident, the Task Force apprehended two smugglers along with a car and seized red sandalwood.

In the wee hours of Tuesday, 6 February, a police constable on duty, P Ganesh was killed by the red sandal smugglers in the Annamayya District of Andhra Pradesh.

After receiving a tip-off about the smuggling activity, in the Cheenepalli Village of the KV Palli Mandal, in Annamayya District, the police started the search operations of the vehicle set up at the Gollapallo River junction.

In an attempt to stop the vehicle the red sandal smugglers hit and ran over the constable. The incident took place around 3: 30 am on Tuesday.

Speaking to South First the KV Palli SI Lokesh said, “The police constable was severely injured. He was immediately rushed to the Pileru Government Hospital.”

The constable later succumbed to the injuries.

Following the incident, the Task Force apprehended two smugglers along with a car and seized red sandalwood.

Annamayya district was formed from the parts of the erstwhile Chittoor district and YSR districts.

The district which comes under the Rayalaseema region is also the home for the Seshachalam forests, which are notoriously famous for the red sandalwood smuggling.
