The Cyberabad police on Sunday, 8 January, booked the building owner and contractor for the death of two people after an under-construction building collapsed on Saturday in Shanthi Nagar, Kukatpally.
The police identified the building owner, who was constructing a hostel, as Padmaja, and the independent ready-mix contractor (RMC) as Bhujanga Rao.
While two construction labourers — Daya Shankar and Anand (both 22) from Uttar Pradesh — died on the spot, two others suffered injuries.
“We are waiting for the postmortem of the deceased to get over first. We are also trying to settle the compensation and after that the arrest will be made. If we arrest now, they would back off from the compensation. The injured are being treated and are out of danger now,” T Narsing Rao, SHO Kukatpally, told South First.
Meanwhile, the Kukatpally police registered the case against the accused under IPC 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (attempt for culpable homicide).
The incident happened around 3 pm on Saturday when the workers were carrying out the concretisation of pillars on the third floor.
The police said that around 15 workers were in the building at the time, but Shankar and Anand were unlucky that the concrete slabs and pillars of the fifth floor suddenly fell on the fourth floor. The two were buried in the debris and died.
The entire third floor also collapsed and the site turned into a concrete wreckage. The other workers escaped, the police said.
Soon after the building collapsed, the GHMC’s disaster response force (DRF), fire services, and NDRF personnel, along with police and revenue officials, reached the spot and began a rescue operation.
It took four-and-a-half hours to remove the debris and extricate the bodies of the labourers.
P Ravinder Kumar, GHMC deputy commissioner of Kukatpally circle, told South First.”Show cause notices were given to the owner of the building four days ago after the unauthorised floors were detected.”
He added that the notice asked the owner to stop laying third floor slabs and building fourth floor on permitted stilt + 2 upper floors as per high court orders
