The students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy in Tamil Nadu called off a protest against a contract worker who allegedly sexually assaulted a student in a hostel after the warden apologised and initiated action.

The incident

It is said that when the student notified the hostel warden regarding the incident, the warden criticised the students for “inappropriate dressing”.

“Why do you dress like this, if you dress like that, they will do like this,” the warden allegedly said to the student.

Enraged by the girl students protested in front of NIT Trichy’s director. Following that Trichy district SP Varunkumar came there and conducted an investigation after hearing the demands of the students.

The students said, “The authorities must ensure our safety in the hostel. The warden who criticised the student’s dress should be suspended or should apologise.” Varun Kumar also held talks with the college administration.

Later, on the instructions of the college management, the hostel warden publicly apologised to the students. After that,

“The security requests will be fulfilled in a day or two. The college administration will work carefully so that problems like this don’t happen again. If there is any problem, you can inform me.” Varun Kumar assured the students.

Police probing the incident

The police said they were probing why a male worker was allowed inside the women’s hostel.

“It has to be ascertained how a male worker was allowed inside the women’s hostel where one of the cameras was not working,” Varun Kumar told reporters.

The culprit was arrested immediately after the affected student gave a complaint to the police, he said and added that women’s safety should be accorded a priority.

Women police have been asked to interact with the female students to ascertain if there had been similar instances in the past, the SP said.

The complainant had claimed that the technician entered her room under the pretext of fixing up the Wi-Fi on Thursday night and allegedly misbehaved with her, police said.
