Over ₹10 lakh in cash seized on Telangana polling day; GHMC uses drones in Nampally

The flying squad of the Election Commission of India (ECI) seized ₹10.2 lakh in cash on Thursday, 30 November, from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.

This, even as Telangana went to polling booths to elect its representatives to the 119-member state Assembly.

Meanwhile, the GHMC said as many as 44 FIRs had been filed in 1,000 cases related to electoral malpractices.

Its Directorate of Enforcement, Vigilance, and Disaster Management (EV&DM) used drones in Hyderabad’s Nampally Assembly Constituency to ensure smooth and fair polling.

ECI crackdown in Hyderabad

Ever since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into force, the ECI’s flying squad conducted 61 Nakkas operations and registered 4,650 cases.

As many as 2,440 non-bailable warrants have been issued, with 15 cases registered on Thursday alone.

The ECI said it erased 29 poll-related graffiti on Thursday, taking the total number to 6,787 ever since the MCC was enforced.

As many as 87,014 posters, too, were removed, besides banners, which took the cumulative count to 30,150.

The ECI raised concerns over 12 unauthorised meetings held on Thursday as it violated the MCC and raised questions over the adherence to democratic principles during the election.

The commission noted that the flying squad also observed misuse of vehicles in various areas, including Malak Pet, Secunderabad, Mushirabad, Sanat Nagar, Goshamahal, Nampally, and Yakatpura.

“The flying squad responded swiftly, registering violations in Amber Pate, Secunderabad, and Khairatabad,” the ECI added.

With the MCC in force for over a month now, the ECI has seized a staggering ₹87.27 crore in cash.
