NIA file chargesheet in Hyderabad terrorist case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday, 29 March, filed a charge sheet in the Hyderabad terror recruitment case in which the city’s police arrested three people in October 2022.

According to the the NIA, the three arrested accused from Hyderabad — Mohammad Abdul Wajid alias Zahed (39), Mohammad Samiuddin alias Sami (39), and Maaz Hassan Farooq alias Maaz (29) — have been charged for their role in the terrorist conspiracy to raise funds, collect explosives, and carry out recruitment for terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).

While the three accused were arrested on 2 October with four hand grenades and ₹20 lakh, the NIA took over the case in February this year.

Hand grenades dead dropped

According to the police, Wajid was involved in several terror-related cases in Hyderabad and recruited several youngsters on the directions of Pakistan-based handlers of LeT and the country’s premier intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The NIA has said that four hand-grenades were dead dropped on 28 September, 2022, at an isolated spot near Manoharabad village on the Hyderabad-Nagpur highway.

“Zahed got the hand-grenade consignment collected through Sami and then gave one grenade each to Sami and Maaz with instructions to hurl the same at public gatherings during Dussehra festival,” the NIA said.

The agency added that the accused were arrested before they could implement their plan of carrying out blasts in Hyderabad.

NIA investigation leads to Pakistan connection

The NIA said that Wajid conspired with his gang members hailing from Hyderabad but settled in Pakistan — Farhatullah Ghori alias FG, Siddique Bin Osman alias Rafique alias Abu Hamzala, and Abdul Majeed alias Chotu.

They aimed at carrying out terror acts, including blasts and lone-wolf attacks, in Hyderabad city to create terror in the minds of the common public.

The police also said that Zahed received hand grenades from his Pakistan-based handlers and was planning to hurl them at public gatherings and processions in order to create communal tension.

They said he also received money from terrorist organisations for his activities.

Meanwhile, the NIA booked the accused under IPC Sections 120 B (party to criminal conspiracy), 153 A (promote disharmony), and multiple sections of the Explosives Substances Act  and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
