NCRB 2022: Telugu states report most number of crimes against women in South India

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reported a 19.53 percent year-on-year increase in crimes against women in the five South Indian states in 2022.

Andhra Pradesh, with 25,503 cases — up from 17,752 in 2021 — led the South Indian states in crimes against women. Telangana followed with 22,066 cases.

Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of crimes against women — 65,743 — followed by Rajasthan (45,058).

As many as 4,26,433 cases of crimes against women were registered in 2022, with the southern states accounting for 89,802 cases registered under different sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The NCRB report also noted over 16 kinds of offenses against women in 2022.

The cases included rape and gang rape, dowry deaths, abetment to suicide, miscarriage, acid attacks, attempt to acid attack, cruelty by husband or relatives, kidnaping and abduction of women, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, and cyber crimes.

South Indian scenario

After the Telugu states, Karnataka reported 17,813 cases of atrocities against women in 2022. In 2021, the state had registered 14,468 cases.

Kerala posted 15,213 cases in 2022 (13,539 in 2021) with Tamil Nadu recording the lowest among the southern states — 9,207 (8501 in 2021). The total number of cases recorded in five states in 2021 was 75,125 and 89,802 cases in 2022.

Andhra Pradesh topped in cruelty by husbands or relatives, reporting 11,964 followed by Telangana (9,996), Kerala (4,998), Karnataka (2,812), and Tamil Nadu (1,043).

In cases of assault on women to outrage her modesty, Karnataka (6,201) reported the most, followed by Andhra Pradesh (5,884), Kerala (4,940), Telangana (4,652), and Tamil Nadu (1,414).

Andhra Pradesh reported eight cases of rape/gang rape incidents, while Telangana followed with seven, Karnataka eight, Tamil Nadu six and Kerala two.

In the case of dowry deaths, Telangana topped with 137 cases, followed Karnataka (165), Tamil Nadu (129) and Andhra Pradesh (100). Only 11 cases were registered in Kerala during the reporting period.

Telangana reported the most number of abetment to suicide cases (368), followed by Andhra Pradesh (358), Karnataka (288), Tamil Nadu (203) and Kerala (68).

Telangana and Kerala did not report any cases of miscarriage in 2022. Karnataka registered 13 cases, while Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu reported four and two cases, respectively.

As many as 83 acid-attack cases were registered in Andhra Pradesh. Karnataka (5), Kerala (4), Telangana (3) and Tamil Nadu (2) followed.

Three each attempts to acid attack cases were registered in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu reported two each, while no case was registered in Kerala.

Karnataka topped in cybercrime cases against women (235), followed by Kerala (133), Tamil Nadu (131), Andhra Pradesh (108) and Telangana (40).

Offenders known to victims

In Telangana, the offenders were known to the victims in 812 cases. Kerala followed with 803, while Andhra Pradesh reported 604, Karnataka 584, and Tamil Nadu 419 such cases.

Telangana reported the highest number of cases in which a family member was the offender (137). Kerala (70), Karnataka (49) Andhra Pradesh (39), and Tamil Nadu (25) followed.
