Synopsis: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump have been engaged in a public spat on social media. Musk accused Trump of being named in the Epstein files, while the latter termed the former “crazy”.

In a series of media posts, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk on Friday, 6 June, accused US President Donald Trump of being named in the Epstein files, suggesting that this is the reason they have not been made public.

“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” Musk wrote on X on Thursday.

The post comes amid an escalating war of words over Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” on spending, which has played out across multiple platforms, including X and Truth Social.

The development comes a day after Musk publicly slammed the tax and spending bill. Trump reacted to the Tesla CEO’s statement on Thursday, saying: “I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

Trump defends his policies

Trump responded with a barrage of posts on Truth Social early Thursday morning, dismissing Musk’s relevance and defending his policies.

“I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago… I didn’t create this mess, I’m just here to FIX IT,” Trump posted, touting what he called one of the “Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress.”

Further, Trump claimed Elon parted ways with his administration after a meeting about travel to Mars.

“Elon parted ways with my administration after a very tense meeting about travel to Mars. Elon discussed how he planned to have women on board the Space Ship and the need for sleeping areas “because of the implication.” He never explained what that meant, and to be honest, I found it to be very strange. We asked him to leave after that meeting. There are laws, Elon, even in Space!” Trump wrote.

The online exchange appears to have further fractured the Republican right, with Musk openly floating the idea of a new political party and even endorsing Senator JD Vance as a potential Trump replacement.

Musk hints at new political party

In a repost of user Ian Miles Cheong’s prediction that Elon would “win” a political showdown with Trump, Musk highlighted the comment: “Trump should be impeached and JD Vance should replace him.”

Musk also pinned a poll on X asking whether it’s time to create a new political party “that actually represents the 80% in the middle.” Over 3.6 million users have voted, with a majority responding “Yes.”

Vance, widely seen as a Trump loyalist until recently, appeared amused by the unfolding drama, posting a photo with comedian Theo Von and joking, “Slow news day, what are we even going to talk about?”

Trump, for his part, launched into a detailed criticism of Musk’s role in US electric vehicle policy and subsidies, accusing him of erratic behaviour and calling for the termination of government contracts tied to Musk’s companies. “Elon was ‘wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave,” Trump wrote. “He just went CRAZY!”

“The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts. I was always surprised that Biden didn’t do it!” Trump wrote.

Musk, undeterred, followed up with another cryptic post: “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”
