The Congress high command is understood to be very angry with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for the handling of Miss World 2025, which led Miss England Milla Magee to make fresh allegations that one person had made suggestive comments to her during the event in Hyderabad.
Miss World 2025, which concluded on 31 May, continues to cause tremors in the party. Revanth Reddy may have been on stage as the new Miss World was crowned at the Grand Finale, but the event left a bad taste in the mouth.
The Congress party high command, furious over Magee’s fresh allegations to The Guardian on 1 June that “one person” who approached her had asked her whether she would be willing to meet him in private when he visits London next time.
The chief minister, who left for Delhi on the morning of Monday, 9 June, to discuss the portfolios to be allocated to the newly inducted cabinet ministers and other organisational issues, is also expected to face a barrage of questions on what had happened during the Miss World 2025 event and why Magee had to leave the event midway and make allegations that she felt exploited and objectified.
In her interview, she said one person whom she could not identify walked up to her and said, “Next time I am in London or England, hook me up,” leaving her feeling uncomfortable. She said later on that she had been “inundated” with messages from women who had taken part in pageants, saying how they felt the same.
She also said that there were a “lot of tears behind the smiles” at the Miss World event in Hyderabad and that she was unwilling to “promote a lie”. She said that while the pageant was purported to be about “beauty with purpose,” it was all about “wearing different ballgowns every day and what you look like”.
The Congress central leadership is deeply unsettled over the damage Magee’s interviews with The Sun and The Guardian may have done to the image of the state government.
Magee (24), who was reigning Miss England, left the Miss World Pageant 2025 on 16 May, after her arrival on 7 May, citing “exploitation,” “objectification,” “stereotypes,” and the contestants having been made to entertain wealthy guests with small talk in what seemed a gesture of saying thank you to them.
In her first interview with The Sun, immediately after she left the contest midway, she said that she felt like a “prostitute” and that the contestants were being made to act as performing monkeys rather than espousing their cause on the global forum.
She became the first Miss England to withdraw from the contest midway in its 74-year history. In the second interview with The Guardian, she referred to the one person who walked up to her and whether she would hook up with him when he is in London or England next time.
The Congress central leadership, which came to know about the “indecent behaviour,” is understood to have pulled up Revanth Reddy over two names doing the rounds linking them to the allegations Magee had made, of whom one is a minority leader and the other a member of Parliament.
The party leaders are furious with Revanth Reddy because, although the party had upbraided him for bringing disrepute to the government, he is still being seen openly with the two individuals whose names are in circulation, without taking any action against them.
Interestingly, after Magee gave her first interview with The Sun, the state government had ordered an inquiry to identify those who made the contestants, mainly Magee, uncomfortable.
The police, who conducted a quick probe, are understood to have explained to the chief minister their findings, but they were never made public. The police, in fact, had said that no such inquiry took place in the first place, but it did take place, and it was an informal affair.
