BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri in Lok Sabha

BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri repeatedly used offensive terms and religious slurs to abuse Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Danish Ali during a discussion on the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission in the Lok Sabha late on Thursday, 21 September.

It was while responding to Opposition criticism that the ruling BJP was taking all credit for the mission and sidelining the scientists, that Bidhuri attacked Danish Ali using communal slurs.

The open abuse aimed at Danish Ali’s religious identity shocked the Opposition, with several leaders demanding action against Bidhuri.

Taking to the social media platform X, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra asked the Lok Sabha Speaker, the prime minister, and other leaders to take action.

“Abusing Muslims, OBCs an integral part of BJP culture — most now see nothing wrong with it. @narendramodi has reduced Indian Muslims to living in such a state of fear in their own land that they grin & bear everything.

“Sorry but I’m calling this out. Ma Kali holds my spine,” she posted.

Remarks expunged

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh later expressed regret in the Lok Sabha for the “objectionable” remarks made by the BJP member.

Singh said he had not heard the remarks and urged the Speaker to delete them from the proceedings if they had hurt the Opposition members.

Congress member K Suresh, who was in the Chair, said he had already directed the officials to expunge the remarks.

“I express regret if the Opposition is hurt by the remarks made by the member,” the defence minister said.

Speaker warns of ‘strict action’

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday took “serious note” of the objectionable remarks made by Bidhuri in the House and warned him of “strict action” if such behaviour was repeated in the future, officials said.

The Congress on Friday took strong objection to Ramesh Bidhuri’s remarks and demanded his suspension from the House.

Terming the remarks as an insult to all MPs, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the apology offered by Union Minister Rajnath Singh was a mere eyewash and not sufficient.

Strict action should be taken against him, he demanded.

Meanwhile, the CPI(M) demanded the arrest of Bidhuri.

“No privilege for hate speech, arrest Ramesh Bidhuri. Filthy abusive language used by BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri against Danish Ali ( BSP) on the floor constitutes the worst kind of hate speech indicted by the Supreme Court. No MP can claim privilege for such speech. He should be arrested,” the CPI(M) said in a statement.
