The world’s largest democratic festival is coming to an end with the Election Commission of India (ECI) taking up the counting of votes on Tuesday, 4 June. In a tightly fought contest, the incumbent BJP lost the brute majority it has been enjoying since 2019.

Of the 8,360 candidates in the fray for the 543 seats across the country, only 799 are women. Incidentally, the 2024 general elections are the first after the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed.

The seven-phase polling began on 19 April and concluded on 1 June, with the participation of a record 642 million voters, including 312 million women.

BJP did not get majority despite appeals to vote in the name of Modi, this is Modi's defeat: Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the people of the nation have accepted Rahul Gandhi.

"In both constituencies, Rahul Gandhi won by huge margins," Siddaramaiah said.

"We have not been able to win seats in the state as per our expectations. We were expecting 15-20 seats. However, in 2019, we won only one position. This time we have risen to 9. We have got 45.34% vote share and BJP got 46.04%. In 2019, BJP got 51.38 percent votes. We got only 31.88% votes. Compared to 2019, our vote share has increased," he said.

"Modi asked for votes in the name of religion and God and directly spoke against other religions. Even though he falsely claimed that the Congress would take away the reservations of the backward, Modi did not get a majority. NDA lost 64 seats from last time. He said that this is BJP's defeat at the national level," the chief minister said.

Due to this defeat, Modi has no moral right to become the Prime Minister again, he added.

CPI(M) will analyse factors behind severe LS poll defeat in Kerala, says Govindan

Facing a severe drubbing in the Lok Sabha polls in Kerala, the CPI(M) on Tuesday said the party and the Left Front would examine all the factors that led to their defeat.

CPI(M) State Secretary M V Govindan said that although the LDF had suffered a similar drubbing in the 2019 LS polls, it later won the local self-government polls and the Assembly election.

When reporters asked whether an anti-incumbency wave against the second Pinarayi Vijayan government was the reason for the mass drubbing of the Left candidates in the state, he trivialised the question and said it alone was not the factor.

"We will examine all the factors, including the selection of candidates, government-related matters, and so on. If there is anything to be corrected, we will surely correct it. People are the final judges," Govindan added.

His statement comes as the Congress-led UDF continued to maintain its lead in the majority of seats in Kerala on Tuesday, with its candidates marching ahead with comfortable margins in its strongholds against their nearest rivals from the CPI(M)-led LDF and the BJP-led NDA.

Putting an end to the electoral drought for the BJP in Kerala, actor-politician Suresh Gopi, the saffron party's candidate, secured a comfortable margin of 75,079 votes in the Thrissur constituency, against his rivals from the LDF and the UDF.

The big question: Will BJP open an account in Kerala?

The BJP has pinned high hopes on constituencies like Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur.

If UDF's Shashi Tharoor wins, he will grab the record for representing Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha Constituency for the most time in a row (four times).

In 2019, out of 20 seats, UDF won 19, and LDF 1.

In 2024, one of the partners in the UDF alliance - Kerala Congress (M) joined the LDF.

Thus, Kottayam's sitting MP Thomas Chazhikkadan, who won when he was part of UDF, is now contesting from the LDF camp.

The Indian Union Muslim League, part of the UDF, had fielded two of its sitting MPs - Mohammad Basheer and Abdussamad Samadani - but with a twist, they switched their seats.

Now, Basheer is contesting from Malappuram and Samadani from Ponnani.

The Congress also sprang a surprise as it denied Thrissur sitting MP TN Prathapan another term.

The Congress fielded Vadakara MP K Muraleedharan from Thrissur and handed over the Vadakara seat to Palakkad MLA Shafi Parambil.

In the NDA camp, three former Congress leaders are contesting: Baiju Kalasala (BDJS candidate for Mavelikkara), Anil K Antony (Pathanamthitta) and C Raghunath (Kannur).
