Dr TV Ramachandra o Let's Talk Water

In hard-hitting comments against the Indian Judiciary, Prof TV Ramachandra from the Centre for Ecological Sciences, IISc said the judiciary is not favourable to environmentalists and that there is probably a gap in that aspect.

Speaking on South First’s Let’s Talk Water podcast with Nolan Pinto, he says, “The kind of thing that happens with executive machinery with corruption, might be happening there (too).”

Taking the Bellandur lake as an example, Prof Ramachandra explains, “There is an encroachment there. As part of the NGT committee, we have asked for the eviction as they are illegal encroachers. But unfortunately, the Judiciary has not given (any judgement) even after five years.”

“How long does the city have to wait? How long do people in India have to wait for justice?” he questions.

Based on this prevailing situation, Prof Ramachandra calls for reforms in the judiciary. “We need to have honest people in the judiciary. In all the sectors, we need to have people with integrity. That can happen only when you make them environmentally literate,” he says.

He reasons, “People with environmental literacy not only maintain integrity but are also true to the nation. That kind of society we need to develop.”

The way to go about this work is a simple prescription he says. “Teach a child to respect Mother Earth. When the child grows up, that child will know how to respect mother and also Mother Earth. The best prescription is teaching a child about the environment through a mother at home.”
