The trio allegedly assaulted an SI, who probed the woman constable's complaint.
Chennai Police have registered a case against three Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) members for allegedly misbehaving with a woman police officer and assaulting a sub-inspector, who went to question them in Ayanavaram.
The incident reportedly took place near the Bharat Petroleum petrol bunk on KH Road in Ayanavaram on Tuesday, 14 September, where police personnel, including a woman constable from the Vepery Police Station, were deployed for security duty for the Tirupati umbrella procession.
Police received information that three men were allegedly consuming alcohol and creating a disturbance near the petrol bunk. Woman constable Gayathri reportedly went to the spot and asked them to stop drinking in public and disperse. The three allegedly abused her and used obscene language.
The distressed constable subsequently approached the Ayanavaram Inspector, who directed Sub-Inspector Meghanathan to inquire. During the inquiry, the three allegedly assaulted the SI.
Police identified the three as Madanraj, 33, a TVK functionary from Ayanavaram; Mohammed Sakabudeen, 33, a law college student; and Sridhar Raj, 33, a Madras High Court advocate. Police initially detained the three and released them after they reportedly submitted apology letters.
The initial release triggered criticism on social media, with allegations that police had let them off because of their association with the TVK. Following the controversy, police registered a case against the three under four sections, including provisions relating to preventing a government employee from discharging his duty and using obscene language. Further investigation is underway.
