A sessions court in Lakshadweep on Wednesday, 11 January, sentenced four people, including Lakshadweep MP Mohammed Faizal and his brothers, to 10 years in jail in connection with an attempt to murder case.
Lawyers associated with the case said the District and Sessions Court in Kavaratti also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh each on the convicts in the case registered against them in 2009.
The MP will be lodged in the Central Prison in Kannur in Kerala.
According to reports, Faizal is expected to move the Kerala High Court, which has jurisdiction over Lakshadweep, against the conviction and get it stayed to prevent his disqualification as a lawmaker.
Faizal has been serving as the MP of Lakshadweep since 2014.
According to the lawyers, the MP and others assaulted and grievously injured Padanath Salih, a Congress worker, when they had reached their neighbourhood for intervening in a political issue during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
Salih was the son-in-law of former Union Minister PM Sayeed.
