KTR steps up attack on ruling Congress in Telangana over co-operative poll delays and Krishna waters

The BRS working president claimed that the Congress was avoiding co-operative elections after failing to implement its promises to farmers and agricultural labourers, and dared it to hold the polls if it truly believed it had served farmers well.

Synopsis: BRS Working President KT Rama Rao on Tuesday accused the Congress government in Telangana of mishandling Krishna river waters and delaying key irrigation projects, thereby harming farmers in the State. He also alleged that the Congress was avoiding co-operative and local body elections due to fear of defeat, claiming it had failed to deliver on its promises to farmers and agricultural labourers.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and former minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) on Tuesday, 23 December, launched a blistering attack on the Congress government in Telangana, accusing it of lacking a basic understanding of river water issues.

Addressing a felicitation meeting for newly elected sarpanches, deputy sarpanches and ward members at the BRS office in Nalgonda, KTR alleged that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had “zero understanding” of inter-State river water sharing, while irrigation ministers displayed “abysmal ignorance” on the subject.

KTR said the Congress government was resorting to “case politics and intimidation” as it was unable to answer questions raised by BRS president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) on Krishna river waters and irrigation projects.

“When KCR roars on Krishna waters, this government has no answers. Instead, it leaks stories about cases to divert public attention,” he alleged.

‘Crawling pace of irrigation projects hurting farmers’

Targeting the Chief Minister, KTR said that instead of indulging in what he termed “backdoor politics”, Revanth Reddy should come before the cameras and clearly state what cases he intended to file.

“He is also the Home Minister. Let him speak openly instead of playing hide-and-seek,” KTR said.

He further accused the Congress government of deliberately stalling key irrigation projects, particularly the Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme.

The previous BRS government, KTR said, had completed nearly 90 percent of the works, but the present dispensation had failed to complete even the remaining 10 percent over the last two years.

The government, he alleged, had neither sent the required Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) nor protected Telangana’s interests in Krishna waters, thereby harming the interests of farmers in Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts.

“Our fight will not stop until justice is done to Telangana farmers,” KTR asserted.

Targets Nalgonda Ministers, presses for cooperative polls

KTR took sharp digs at Ministers from Nalgonda district, alleging that one Minister had publicly admitted he was “not prepared” to answer questions on water issues at a media conference, while another made “absurd statements” on water.

“People who do not understand farmers’ hardships have come to power through the backdoor,” he said.

Challenging the Congress government to prove its sincerity towards farmers, KTR demanded the immediate conduct of cooperative society elections. He alleged that the government was avoiding elections due to fear of defeat and was instead filling posts through nominations.

“If the Congress truly believes it has done good to farmers, let it conduct cooperative elections. If elections are held, farmers will teach the government a fitting lesson,” he said, adding that even Zilla Parishad and Mandal Parishad elections were being postponed due to fear of public anger.

KTR claimed that the Congress was running away from elections as it had failed to implement its “420 promises,” including farmer welfare assurances such as Rythu Bandhu and financial support to agricultural labourers.

Calling upon party workers to intensify the agitation, KTR urged them to focus on the implementation of Congress promises “with the single-minded focus of Arjuna’s aim.”

He said the BRS would not be cowed down by cases or threats and would continue to question the government in the public domain.
