Synopsis: The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala until 18 June, with red alerts issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday, 14 June, forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala until 18 June, with red alerts issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Orange alerts are in place for several southern and central districts, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Palakkad.

The IMD has also issued widespread alerts across southern and central Kerala for 16 and 17 June. It also issued alerts to northern districts for 18 June. Red alerts signify rainfall above 20 cm in 24 hours, while orange alerts indicate 11–20 cm.

Restricts fishing

Meanwhile, citing the IMD, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) restricted fishing off the coasts of Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep from 14 June to 18 June.

KSDMA added that the National Centre for Oceanographic Studies and Research (INCOIS) has warned of the possibility of high waves, ranging from 2.8 to 3.5 metres in height, and sea erosion along the Kerala coast on Sunday until 8.30 pm.

The IMD indicated that squally winds (40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph) would continue along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast.

Meanwhile, IMD said heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

It also said heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over North Interior Karnataka and heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
