Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will preside over a joint meeting of the BRS Parliamentary and Legislature Parties, as well as the BRS executive committee, at Telangana Bhavan at 2 pm on Friday, 10 March.

The main agenda is expected to be preparing the party apparatus for the electoral battle later this year.

MPs, MLAs, MLCs, party executive committee members, presidents of district units, and chairpersons of Zilla Parishads, state-level corporations, District Cooperative Marketing Societies, and District Cooperative Central Banks are expected to attend the meeting, said party sources on Wednesday.

The chief minister is expected to take stock of the BRS’ preparedness as Assembly elections are expected in less than eight months.

The political considerations

KCR is expected to review the extent to which the party has been successful in promoting awareness among the people on the implementation of the welfare and other schemes in the state, the feedback for each scheme, and any demands from the people for tweaking any of them.

The party may not discuss the issue of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) calling MLC Kavitha Kalvaluntla — KCR’s daughter — to Delhi for questioning.

However, it will cast a shadow when the party takes up the methods that the BJP dispensation at the Centre has been using against the Opposition leaders.

KCR has already condemned the arrest of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in the Delhi liquor scam case, but was careful enough not to say a word on the course of the ED investigation that is pointing to Kavitha.

KCR might also take a look at efforts going on to make the party spread to other states. This would also become an important factor in brightening the prospects of the party in the Assembly elections.

Probable policy decisions

Many of the decisions that the state Cabinet will take on Thursday are expected to come up for discussion at the 10 March meeting.

The Cabinet might also take a look at extending the Dalit Bandhu scheme to more beneficiaries, bringing in a new sports policy to encourage local talent, and sale of land to shore up revenues for the state exchequer.

The decisions that would have populist appeal would include providing house sites and houses to eligible beneficiaries.

The government has already indicated that those who have land would get a cash help of ₹3 lakh for the construction of houses, to which KCR is expected to give his seal of approval.

A Cabinet sub-committee on this issue has already done some exercises.

The idea was to benefit at least 1 crore families under this scheme, which might turn out to be an electoral milch cow.

The Cabinet may also green-flag the issuing of pattas for podu lands, about which KCR has already made an announcement in the Assembly.

He said he would find an amicable solution to the vexatious issue, and that the festering problem would disappear once and for all.

It is likely that the Cabinet would also discuss what should be done with the rabi paddy which yields only boiled rice in the wake of the Centre making no bones about not taking boiled rice from Telangana as it has a surfeit of it in godowns.

KCR would, after careful deliberation, also clear names for the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota.

This time around, it would be a measured approach as any deviation in the criteria for choosing a candidate might result in rejection by the Governor in the wake of fast-deteriorating relations between the two high offices in the state.
