Kavitha revives broad-based mobilisation strategy for 42% BC quota, echoes KCR's Telangana playbook

Synopsis: Kalvakuntla Kavitha is channeling her father KCR’s inclusive mobilisation strategy from the Telangana movement, re-entering politics with a focused campaign demanding 42% reservations for Backward Classes. After her release on bail in the liquor scam case, Kavitha has launched initiatives and announced a ‘Rail Roko’ protest on July 17, aiming to build cross-party support for the reservation demand

During the second phase of the Telangana movement, BRS Chief K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) famously declared “I will meet anyone from the RSS to the RSU, and if necessary, I will even embrace a scorpion,” underscoring his commitment to achieving statehood for Telangana by building support across all sections of society. This inclusive strategy was pivotal in mobilizing diverse groups and ultimately led to the successful formation of the state.

Now, Kalvakuntla Kavitha, President of Telangana Jagruthi and MLC, appears to be adopting a similar approach. After a period of silence following her release on bail in the liquor scam case, Kavitha has re-entered the political arena with a focused campaign for 42 percent reservations for Backward Classes (BCs). She has already launched several initiatives and announced a ‘Rail Roko’ (rail blockade) protest on July 17 to press for this demand.

Kavitha has made it clear that her sole objective is to secure 42 percent reservations for BCs. To achieve this, she is reaching out across party lines, seeking to unite leaders from various political parties, BC organizations, and civil society groups.

Kavitha meets prominent leaders

In a significant move, she met with R. Krishnaiah, BJP Rajya Sabha MP and prominent BC leader, on Sunday, 22 June. Speaking to the media later, Kavitha demanded that the Congress government in Telangana immediately implement the 42 percent reservations for Backward Classes as promised in the Kamareddy Declaration. “The Congress government has the opportunity to implement the 42 percent BC reservations through a Government Order. However, they are stating that since a bill has already been passed in the Assembly, the matter now lies with the Centre for approval,” she said.

Kavitha emphasized that the upcoming local body elections must be conducted with the 42 percent BC reservations in place. “To ensure this, we must mount pressure on both the central and state governments,” she said, adding that public movements are the only way forward and that she had come to seek the support of R. Krishnaiah in this endeavor. Reports suggest she plans to engage with leaders from the CPI, CPM, Samajwadi Party, RJD, NCP, and RLD, to mobilise support to the issue.

To ensure the success of the upcoming Rail Roko protest, Kavitha is coordinating with BC organizations and allied political parties. After the protest, she intends to lead a delegation to Delhi to meet with the President and the Prime Minister to further press her demands.
