Karnataka polls 2023: Congress releases fourth list with Jagadish Shettar, HD Thammaiah

The party fielded Mohammed Yousuf Savanur from the Shiggaon Assembly seat, from where Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is the BJP candidate.

Congress 10-point manifesto

The Congress on Tuesday, 18 April, released its fourth list of seven candidates for the Karnataka Assembly elections and fielded former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, who recently quit the BJP to join it, from his traditional Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency.

The party fielded Mohammed Yousuf Savanur from the Shiggaon Assembly seat, from where Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is the BJP candidate. Bommai represents the Shiggaon constituency in the outgoing Assembly.

Newbies get tickets

Congress has fielded HD Thammaiah, who recently quit BJP and joined the party, from Chikkamagaluru, where the ruling party’s national general secretary CT Ravi is in the fray.

Shettar, the 67-year-old six-time MLA from Hubli-Dharwad (Central), quit the BJP after being denied a party ticket.

A senior Lingayat leader from the north Karnataka region, who had also served as state BJP president, Leader of Opposition, Speaker and minister in the past, the six-time MLA had joined Congress on Monday, after quitting the BJP over being denied the ticket to contest the Assembly polls.

Sitting MLA Durgappa S Hoolageri has been fielded from Lingsugur, while in Harihar sitting MLA S Ramappa has been denied the ticket and it has been given to Nandagavi Srinivas.

Other candidates named in the fourth list are Deepak Chinchore (Hubli-Dharwad-West) and MA Gopalaswamy (Shravanabelagola).

With the addition of seven names and the first three lists of 124, 42 and 43 candidates respectively (including in Melukote where it’s backing a candidate of a different party), the Congress has so far announced candidates for 216.

The Congress is yet to announce candidates for eight remaining seats, out of the total 224 seats.

The Assembly polls will be held on 10 May and the results will be announced on 13 May.

The Congress is seeking to oust the BJP from power in the southern state.
