Volunteerlaku Vandanam

For the third year in a row, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday, 19 May, felicitated volunteers who are helping 64 lakh beneficiaries of the government pension scheme receive their financial benefit on the first of every month.

They were bestowed with Seva Mitra, Seva Ratha, and Seva Vajra awards at a function billed as “Volunteerlaku Vandanam” in Vijayawada.

2.66 lakh volunteers hired

The state government hired about 2.66 lakh volunteers to help the beneficiaries of the pension scheme get their help without any difficulty as they would visit each and every household and hand over the amount to them.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said: “The volunteers are rendering a great service. They are helping the government identify beneficiaries for about 25 welfare schemes in implementation in the state. They are like the government’s soldiers.”

Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the volunteer network in the state was unparalleled.

“No other state in the country has a network of volunteers like we have. Transcending the barriers of caste, religions, region, and political affiliations, the volunteers are picking up the beneficiaries strictly in accordance with the eligibility criteria.”

Training his guns at the erstwhile TDP government in the state, the chief minister said that the Janma Bhoomi committees that were constituted by the previous government only ended up doing illegal activities.

“There used to be discrimination and one needed to grease the palms of the officials if one wanted to get any benefit under a welfare scheme. But now each volunteer in the present government is an ambassador of the welfare schemes that we are implementing,” he said.

‘Consumed with jealousy’

He said that consumed with jealousy over the way the state government was going to the rescue of the needy, those who failed to serve them were now trying to heap allegations on the government.

The state transferred about ₹2.10 lakh core through the direct benefit transfer method to the beneficiaries’ accounts so far, he said.

Jagan Mohan Reddy said that the TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu and his men hate such a responsive and responsible volunteer organisation.

“They feel dyspepsia which does not go away even if they take dozen gelusil tablets. They will continue to carry a vilification campaign against them. Are they human beings at all?” he asked.

The chief minister asked the volunteers to bear in mind what Chandrababu Naidu had said about them and how he derided them that they were nothing short of drunkards who create trouble on the streets all the time.

Naidu had even said that after coming to power he would scrap the volunteer system and restore Janma Bhoomi committees. He had even tried to obstruct the volunteer system by knocking on the doors of the court, he said.
