Synopsis: India has started evacuating Indian students from Tehran. They are likely to be shifted to a safer location within that country before moving them out.
Indians in Tehran are trying to leave the city as the conflict between Israel and Iran further escalated, with both sides launching missile and drone attacks at each other.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has asked Indian nationals to leave the city. The closure of Iran’s airspace has further complicated the matter.
The embassy is monitoring the situation and working to relocate around 4,000 stranded students to safer areas by land. Most students are from Jammu and Kashmir pursuing medical courses.
The Hindu reported that the evacuation of Indian students from Tehran has already begun. They are likely to be shifted to a safer location in Iran before moving them out of the country.
Iranian authorities have assured that they will cooperate with India to evacuate stranded Indians, especially students, via land routes.
Among those Indians stranded are a group of fewer than 10 people from Kerala’s Malappuram. They had travelled to Iran on business from Middle Eastern countries before the conflict. The Department of Non-Resident Keralites’ Affairs (NoRKA) said the Malayalis are safe in a hotel.
Indian authorities in Iran have collected the details of Indian nationals in that country through Google Forms.
Israel and Iran had been engaged in a proxy war for years. On Friday, Israel attacked Iran’s nuclear capabilities, in what it called Operation Rising Lion. Tehran retaliated with a wave of missiles and drones.
Iran’s health ministry said on Monday, 16 June, that around 224 people have been killed. Reports said 14 people were killed in Israel.
