INDIA bloc MPs protest seeking Amit Shah's resignation.

The INDIA bloc MPs on Friday, 20 December, organised a protest march from Vijay Chowk to the Parliament complex seeking an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his remarks on Dr BR Ambedkar and seeking his resignation over the same.

Meanwhile, BJP MP Nishikanth Dubey moved a breach of privilege motion against Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi accusing him of showing a “criminally edited” speech of Shah.

However, INDIA bloc MPs protested the BJP’s actions against Rahul Gandhi and claimed that the fascist ideology of the BJP had come to the fore.

The NDA MPs led by the BJP also staged a protest against the Congress claiming that the grand old party disrespected Ambedkar.

Congress questions BJP

Wayanad MP and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi joined the INDIA bloc protest and condemned the FIR filed against her brother Rahul Gandhi over allegedly mishandling BJP MPs on Thursday.

“The entire country is watching, they have slapped several cases on Rahul Gandhi. They bring in new FIRs and lie. This shows their desperation level,” she said.

The Congress said Shah insulted Baba Saheb in Parliament and added: “Baba Saheb is our revered one, India will never tolerate his insult.”

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said the Delhi Police would do whatever the home minister asked them

“Whatever happened in front of the Makar Dwar was completely planned. The home minister insulted BR Ambedkar and we all demanded an apology. They planned all this to distract the issue. He the home minister should have apologised. This FIR was not against Rahul Gandhi, this is against BR Ambedkar,” Ramesh said.

Meanwhile, Congress General Secretary and Alappuzha MP KC Venugopal questioned the biased action by the Delhi police.

“Our agitation is very clear. Amit Shah should resign; he should tender an apology to the nation. When we are asking this, if you want to put our leaders and us in jail, you are most welcome. Yesterday Varsha Gaikwad also gave a complaint, but there is no FIR. The FIR is only for BJP’s complaint?” he questioned.

‘Unconstitutional action’

Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of acting unconstitutionally.

“Parliament session might be concluding today (Friday) but issues don’t conclude. The insult to Babasaheb Ambedkar and the attitude of BJP towards him – Opposition demands that he should admit his mistake and apologise…If we have to take the country forward, Babasaheb’s Constitution shows the way. BJP attempts to weaken Constitution and democracy from time to time,” he said.

“We will have to understand the tactics of the BJP. They first do unconstitutional things, and do injustice. When you stand with those who have faced injustice, they slap false cases. This is not happening for the first time. This is BJP’s strategy,” he added.

SP MP Dimple Yadav said, “We want the BJP MPs to apologise because they have insulted Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar who is an idol for every citizen of the country…”

“BJP goes ahead with just one side. It never goes ahead with India’s Constitution, democracy and its people. I think BJP should apologise for yesterday’s face-off because only the BJP government and BJP MPs are responsible for it,” she added.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said, “It is a diversionary tactic. They have continued to do this against Rahul Gandhi. We stand in solidarity behind his demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation.”

“Just to protect the home minister’s fragile ego, we are seeing this happening,” she added.

NDA protest

Meanwhile, BJP-led NDA MPs staged a protest against the Congress in front of the Gandhi statue on the Parliament premises. They alleged that the Congress party disrespected Dr BR Ambedkar.

BJP MP CP Joshi said, “This is an insult to democracy. Congress party and its leaders have always attempted to shred the Constitution and democracy of this country. Yesterday’s incident was very unfortunate…This makes it clear that when Home Minister Amit Shah exposed their true face before the country, it angered them and they hatched this conspiracy…People of the country can never tolerate such hooliganism.”

BJP MP K Sudhakar said, “It is very painful to see this unparliamentary. It is a black day in our democratic setup. The way the Opposition leader, who firmly says that he believes in the way of democracy, behaved yesterday is totally unwarranted, unrequired and it is really condemnable.”

Officials, meanwhile, said BJP MPs, Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, who were allegedly injured after a scuffle in Parliament on Thursday, are stable and normal.
