Ahead of the Vice Presidential election, the Opposition INDIA bloc on Tuesday, 19 August, named former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as their nominee.
The decision was announced by Congress President and INDIA bloc Chairman Mallikarjun Kharge. Kharge said the Vice Presidential contest was an ideological battle.
“All Opposition parties have nominated Shri B. Sudershan Reddy garu as their joint candidate for the position of the Vice President of India,” he added.
Following the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in July, the position has been declared vacant. The NDA, led by the BJP, on Sunday named veteran party leader from Tamil Nadu and incumbent Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan as its candidate.
Kharge said that Justice Sudershan Reddy is among India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists.
“Shri B. Sudershan Reddy garu is one of India’s most distinguished and progressive jurists. He has had a long and eminent legal career, including as Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court and Judge of the Supreme Court. He has been a consistent and courageous champion of social, economic and political justice,” Khrage wrote in a post on X.
“He reflects, fully, the values that shaped our country’s Freedom Movement so profoundly, and the values on which our country’s Constitution and Democracy have been anchored. All these values are under assault and therefore, our collective and determined resolve to fight this election,” he added.
