IMD issues yellow alert for rainfall across Telangana for five days; orange alert in Kerala, Nilgiris district in TN

While the yellow alert means moderate to heavy rains, the orange alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rains.

IMD forecast for Telangana

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, 17 May, issued a yellow alert for rainfall and thunderstorms across Telangana for five days.

The weather department also forecasted extremely heavy rainfall in seven districts of Kerala and issued an orange alert for the state.

Meanwhile, the Nilgiris district administration in Tamil Nadu said very heavy rains have been forecast from 18-20 May and asked people to “avoid” visiting the hilly tourist attraction during this period.

While the yellow alert means moderate to heavy rains, the orange alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rains.

Heavy rains in Telangana

After the rains on Thursday, 16 May, in Hyderabad and other neighbouring districts, the state is expected to witness light to heavy rains, and thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds till 22 May.

The weather department forecasted heavy rains, and thunderstorms on Friday, in isolated places in the districts of Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Nagarkurnool.

On the same day, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, and Wanaparthy, are expected to witness thunderstorms and gusty winds of with the speed of 40 to 50 km per hour.

Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagital, Rajanna Sirsilla, Karimnagar, Siddipet, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajigiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal districts will witness thunderstorms and gusty winds with the speed of 30 to 40 km per hour.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds

However, from Saturday, many districts in the south and east of the state are expected to witness isolated rains, and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with a speed of 30 to 40 km per hour.

On Saturday, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem. Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhuvangiri, Rangareddy, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Jogulamba Gadwal are set to expect thunderstorms and gusty winds with the speed of 30 to 40 km per hour.

On Sunday, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, and Nagarkurnool will witness the said weather.

On Monday apart from the same districts, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal will also witness the thunderstorms.

On Tuesday, 21 May, Peddapalli, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Jangaon, Yadadri Bhongir, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Mahabubnagar, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal districts are expected to witness the thunderstorms.

Heavy rains in Kerala

The IMD has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rains in Malappuram and Wayanad on 17 May, in Palakkad and Malappuram on 18 May, and in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki on 19 May

While on 20 and 21 May, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki might witness heavy to extremely heavy rains.

Meanwhile, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) issued a warning to fishermen and asked them not to foray into the southern Kerala coast and Lakshadweep coast. However, it said that the Karnataka coast was safe for fishing.

This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to begin on 31 May in Kerala.

Orange alert in Nilgiris

Nilgiris District Collector M Aruna said the India Meteorological Department has issued an “orange alert” forecast, meaning very heavy rain of 6 cm-20 cm on May 18, 19 and 20.

“Those coming here should have all the required protection. If possible you can avoid travelling here during this period, she told reporters after chairing a meeting with officials of the Revenue, Police and Fire and Rescue Services department on rain preparedness.

She said all the departments concerned were on standby.

Nearly 3,500 disaster response personnel and required equipment including earthmovers were on standby. About 450 temporary shelters have also been kept ready and people have also been asked to stay indoors.
