Telangana Rains: IMD issues yellow alert for 12 districts on 20-21 August; Hyderabad to see light rains

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 12 districts in Telangana for the next two days, as rains lashed parts of the state on 18 and 19 August.

The yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts.

Southwest Monsoon hit

As the Southwest Monsoon is active over Telangana, heavy rains hit many places in Jagtial, Mulugu, Nirmal districts, and in isolated areas of Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Mancherial, Peddapalli, and Rajanna Sircilla districts of Telangana, on 19 August.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, the highest rainfall was 128.8 mm, which occurred at Mudichintalapalle in Medchal Malkajgiri district, followed by 56.5 mm at Neradigonda (Adilabad), 49 mm at Parkal (Hanamkonda), and 48.3 mm at Gadiguda (Adilabad).

There was no rainfall recorded up to 6 pm of 19 August under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits, the IMD website stated.

The IMD centre at Begumpet announced that for the next 48 hours, light rain is likely to occur in parts of Hyderabad city. Hazy conditions are likely to prevail during morning hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures is likely to be 28 and 22 degrees Celsius, respectively. The surface winds are likely to be westerlies with wind speeds around 6-8 kmph.

Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari alerts DCs

Telangana Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari has asked district collectors to be alert over reports of heavy rain forecast in some districts.

Adilabad, Nizamabad and other districts have been advised to be on alert in view of the forecast of heavy rain.

The concerned district collectors have been instructed to monitor the situation by setting up control rooms at their collectorates, stated an official release on Saturday.

Traffic cops to move into action

Speaking to South First, Hyderabad’s Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) G Sudheer Babu said that during the last spell of rainfall witnessed in the city, they have identified 62 locations in various parts of Hyderabad where there was heavy waterlogging.

“As a yellow warning has been issued, the traffic personnel are on alert to respond immediately in case of any waterlogging. The locations where special focus will be paid are Tirumalagiri, Raj Bhavan Road, Amberpet, Prakash Nagar, Punjagutta, Masab Tank, and Khairatabad,” he said.

He added, “Along with this, we are also coordinating with the Disaster Response Force (DRF) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Our personnel deployed for the rain situation have been provided adequate gear, including raincoats.”
