IMD issues heavy rain and thunderstorm alert for Andhra, Tamil Nadu; rains likely in Telangana too

Low-pressure areas over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts have developed. It is expected to move northwestwards.

Chennai rains

On Wednesday, 20 September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for at least the next two days.

For Telangana, while the IMD forecast thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rains for Wednesday, independent weathermen predicted a “gradual increase in thunderstorms” over the coming days in the state.

“The low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts, and the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level persists tilting southwestwards with height persists. It is expected to move northwestwards across Jharkhand during the next two days,” the IMD said in a release.

Andhra Pradesh

The Amaravati centre of the IMD said that lower tropospheric northwesterly winds are prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, with speeds of 45-55 kmph and gusts of up to 65 kmph.

It forecast that thunderstorms, accompanied with lightning, are likely over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam (coming under Puducherry Union Territory), and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) till 22 September.

As per the IMD, the districts likely to receive rainfall — from the southern coast to the northern coast — are Prakasam, Nellore, Bapatla, Palnadu, Guntur, NTR, Eluru, Vijayawada, Kakinada, Konaseema, Srikakulam, Parvathipuram, Visakhapatnam, and others.

The weather department advised the fishermen to exercise caution and not enter the sea.

Tamil Nadu and Telangana

In Tamil Nadu, the Chennai centre of the IMD has forecast heavy downpour, thunderstorms and lightning for the next two days — till 22 September — while only torrential rains for 23 September.

Some of the areas predicted to receive rainfall are Puducherry, Madurai, Coimbatore, and Chennai. Other areas include Ambattur, Kundrathur, Walajabad, Tiruvallur, Kalavai, Kancheepuram, Arcot, and others.

The IMD also issued moderate rain alert in Sholinghur, Nemili, Maduranthakam, and other areas.

In Telangana, the IMD has placed 11 districts under alert, expected to receive thunderstorms mixed with  lightning and heavy showers.

These districts are Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, and Bhadradri Kothagudem.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old independent weatherman Balaji, famously known as “Telangana Weatherman” on X, predicted thunderstorms from tomorrow in east Telangana and from 21 September in the rest of the state, including Hyderabad.

“These are not widespread severe downpours, expecting high day time heat followed by evening night rains,” he added.
