On Wednesday, 20 September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for at least the next two days.
For Telangana, while the IMD forecast thunderstorms, accompanied by heavy rains for Wednesday, independent weathermen predicted a “gradual increase in thunderstorms” over the coming days in the state.
“The low-pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal-North Odisha coasts, and the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level persists tilting southwestwards with height persists. It is expected to move northwestwards across Jharkhand during the next two days,” the IMD said in a release.
The Amaravati centre of the IMD said that lower tropospheric northwesterly winds are prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, with speeds of 45-55 kmph and gusts of up to 65 kmph.
It forecast that thunderstorms, accompanied with lightning, are likely over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), Yanam (coming under Puducherry Union Territory), and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) till 22 September.
As per the IMD, the districts likely to receive rainfall — from the southern coast to the northern coast — are Prakasam, Nellore, Bapatla, Palnadu, Guntur, NTR, Eluru, Vijayawada, Kakinada, Konaseema, Srikakulam, Parvathipuram, Visakhapatnam, and others.
The weather department advised the fishermen to exercise caution and not enter the sea.
