A 21-year-old final-year student of BSc Mathematics at Azim Premji University was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his college hostel premises in Bengaluru.
The deceased, M Ashwin Nambiar, was a native of Hyderabad. He was staying at the college hostel on the 16th floor, the police said.
According to the Sarjapura police, they were informed about the student’s death around 10:45 am on Friday, 10 November. Preliminary inquiries and investigation by the police pointed to the possibility of Ashwin jumping from the 16th floor of the hostel building to end his life.
A senior police officer, who wished to remain unnamed, told South First on Saturday that the deceased was allegedly depressed as he was unable to cope up with his academics.
He added that Nambiar’s brother, too, was a graduate of BSc Mathematics from the same university and was a bright student who is now in the US.
“However, we are not ruling out any foul play and an investigation is underway,” the officer added.
One of the students staying at the Azim Premji University hostel told the police that he was doing some work in the lobby when he heard a loud thud. When he went to look at what it was, he saw the body of the student on the ground.
According to the police, the incident occurred between 7:30 am and 8 am on Friday morning. The police had searched his pockets for a death note, but there was none.
The cops are waiting for the deceased student’s parents to come to the police station to file a formal complaint. The college authorities had informed the parents on Friday, after which they flew down to Bengaluru on Friday evening.
The student’s father is a retired defence personnel who had worked for the Indian Navy. Family members of the deceased arrived in the city and are awaiting to claim Nambiar’s body after the postmortem. The postmortem was conducted at the St John’s Hospital, the police said.
“We are waiting for the parents to come to the police station and after taking their permission, we will search his room thoroughly to ascertain and establish the reason for him taking the extreme step,” a senior police officer told South First.
Azim Premji University, in a statement, said, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of a student at the University campus. Our hearts go out to his family and friends who knew and loved him. We are doing everything possible to support his immediate family at this time of grief. We request that we respect the family’s privacy during this time.”
Soon after the incident, the University suspended all classes for the day and announced mourning for the deceased scholar.
The Sarjapura police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating further.
