YSRCP Kadapa MP YS Avinash Reddy’s mother Sri Lakshmi has undergone a Cutting Balloon Angioplasty and stent placement procedure at a private hospital in Hyderabad and is said to be stable, according to a statement issued by her doctors.

Avinash Reddy was summoned by the CBI to appear before it in Hyderabad — first on 19 May and then on 22 May — in connection with the murder of former Andhra Pradesh minister and his uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy.

He wrote to the central agency seeking time to appear before it citing his mother’s ill health and intimated that he will come for investigation once his mother fully recovers.

Earlier, Sri Lakshmi was admitted at the Viswa Bharathi hospital in Kurnool, and later, on doctors’ advice, shifted to the AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad.

Viveka murder case

The cousin of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Avinash is under the scanner of the CBI in connection with his uncle Vivekananda Reddy’s murder that took place in March 2019.

Vivekananda Reddy, popularly known as Viveka, was also the paternal uncle of Chief Minister Jagan and brother of former chief minnister YS Rajasekhar Reddy.

He has appeared before the CBI at least five times this year. He subsequently moved the Telangana High Court with the anticipatory bail petition.

The high court on Saturday, 27 May, directed the CBI not to arrest him till 31 May.

Avinash Reddy’s father YS Bhaskar Reddy, was arrested by the CBI on 16 April in connection with the case.

The case so far

Vivekananda Reddy was found murdered at his residence in Pulivendula in Kadapa district on the night of 15 March 2019, just weeks before the Assembly elections in the State.

Kadapa MP Avinash Reddy’s and his father Bhaskar Reddy’s names figured in the murder case that created a sensation before the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh in 2019.

Bhaskar Reddy has been charged under Sections 120B (conspiracy), 302 (murder), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as he played a crucial role in the case, according to the CBI.

The CBI also said that a ₹40 crore “supari” (contract to kill) was offered to the accused to eliminate Viveka.

The Supreme Court last November transferred the case from Andhra Pradesh to a Special CBI Court in Hyderabad for investigation and trial into the conspiracy behind the murder case.

The apex court’s decision came on a petition by Viveka’s daughter, Dr Narreddy Sunitha Reddy, who had in the past alleged that Avinash Reddy was hampering the CBI probe.

Sunitha Reddy was also instrumental in having the investigation, which was being probed by a Special Investigation Team set up by the Andhra Pradesh police, transferred to the CBI.

The case was initially probed by a special investigation team (SIT) of the state Crime Investigation Department but was handed over to the CBI in July 2020.

The CBI filed a charge sheet in the murder case on 26 October, 2021, and followed it up with a supplementary charge sheet on 31 January 2022.
