Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy
Synopsis: A day after the NDA tried to whip up the Tamil pride by making CP Radhakrishnan its Vice-Presidential candidate, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy appealed to all MPs from the two Telugu states to support INDIA bloc’s candidate, former judge of the Supreme Court, Justice B Sudershan Reddy. He also cited how NT Rama Rao had not fielded a candidate against PV Narasimha Rao, and stressed the need for honouring Telugu pride.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has appealed to all Members of Parliament from both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, across all parties, to support Justice B Sudershan Reddy, INDIA bloc’s Vice-Presidential.
Making a fervent appeal at a media conference on Tuesday, 19 August, the Telangana Chief Minister said that Justice Sudershan Reddy’s candidature was not just a political development but a moment of pride for all Telugu people.
“He is a son of Telangana, born into a farmer’s family, who rose to become a judge of the Supreme Court. He is a legal luminary, above politics, and a constitutional expert. In the current times, when there is a threat to the very existence of the Constitution, his leadership is vital,” he said.
Revanth Reddy stressed that the election was an opportunity Telugu people must not miss. “If elected Vice President, he could also go on to become the President of India. It will be a matter of great honour for the Telugu people of both states,” he said.
Drawing a historical parallel, the Chief Minister recalled how in 1991, TDP founder NT Rama Rao did not field a candidate against PV Narasimha Rao in a Lok Sabha by-election, as Rao was poised to become the Prime Minister.
“That was an act of statesmanship. Today, all parties must demonstrate the same wisdom and rise above politics to support a Telugu leader for Vice President,” he said.
Revanth Reddy directly appealed to BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan, BJP MPs from both states, and Left parties to rally behind Justice Sudershan Reddy.
“This is not a Congress candidate but a nominee of the INDI alliance. He has no connection with any political party. He is the Chairman of the Independent Expert Committee and a man of constitutional integrity. It is our collective responsibility to ensure his victory,” he said.
The Chief Minister contrasted the INDIA bloc with the ruling NDA, accusing the latter of indulging in “vote theft” and ridiculing democracy.
“On one side is the NDA, which has undermined democratic values. On the other side stands the INDI alliance, fighting in the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi to safeguard the Constitution. Declaring Justice Sudershan Reddy, a Telugu man who embodies integrity and constitutional values, as our candidate is a matter of immense pride,” he said.
Revanth Reddy urged the people of both states to view the moment as historic. “After PV Narasimha Rao, it is once again a proud moment for the Telugu people that a leader from our soil has been declared as Vice-Presidential candidate. This is a moment to stand united, above politics, and ensure his victory. Every Telugu person carries this responsibility,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister reiterated his appeal: “Justice Sudershan Reddy is our candidate, a Telugu son of the soil, a farmer’s son who went on to uphold the highest principles of justice. His victory is not just for one party or alliance, but for democracy itself. Let us all unite to protect the Constitution and honour Telugu pride.”
The INDIA bloc named Justice Sudershan Reddy as its candidate, a day after the NDA nominated Maharashtra Governor and two-time Coimbatore MP, CP Radhakrishnan, as its candidate. After announcing Radhakrishnan’s candidature, the BJP requested all MPs from Tamil Nadu to support him.
The Vice-Presidential election, necessitated by the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on 21 July, is slated for 9 September.
