The victims, R Sangatamil (36), a resident of Vadapalani, and M Indira (58), a native of Thiruverkadu, were part of an 18-member group from Velappanchavadi village near Thiruverkadu.

Slipped on a rocky path

According to police, while descending the hill, the women slipped on a rocky path and fell into an overflowing stream at the foothills.

Tiruvannamalai Collector K Tharpagaraj, along with personnel from the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Arakkonam, coordinated the search operations.

Indira’s body was recovered about three km downstream, while Sangatamil’s was found later in a lake seven km away at Koilmathimangalam village.

Both bodies were sent to the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruvannamalai for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai, an upper-air cyclonic circulation positioned over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana is expected to fuel intense rain in parts of north Tamil Nadu until Wednesday.

Weather officials are also tracking a low-pressure system likely to form over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal around Wednesday. If it develops further, it could enhance rainfall over Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states, with a few Tamil Nadu districts experiencing heavier downpours due to cloud banding.
