Synopsis: The southwest monsoon intensified over Tamil Nadu with scattered showers across much of the state. The northern districts in the state are likely to receive the heaviest rain over the next two days.

The southwest monsoon intensified over Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, 12 August, with scattered showers across much of the state. The northern districts in the state are likely to receive the heaviest rain over the next two days.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai, an upper-air cyclonic circulation positioned over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Telangana is expected to fuel intense rain in parts of north Tamil Nadu until Wednesday.

On Tuesday, light to moderate showers are likely in several areas, but districts such as Tiruvallur and Ranipet may witness heavy spells.

Heavy rainfall expected

The pattern is expected to persist into Wednesday, extending the rain threat to Vellore and Tirupattur. Meanwhile, as the monsoon strengthens in Kerala, Nilgiris district in western Tamil Nadu may also receive heavy rain till midweek.

The continuing showers have brought some respite from the heat, with most regions recording cooler-than-normal conditions on Monday.

Weather officials are also tracking a low-pressure system likely to form over the northwest and west-central Bay of Bengal around Wednesday. If it develops further, it could enhance rainfall over Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states, with a few Tamil Nadu districts experiencing heavier downpours due to cloud banding.

Chennai may get evening showers triggered by thunderstorms, while the RMC has predicted light to moderate rain in parts of the city on Tuesday. The recent wet spell has lifted Tamil Nadu’s seasonal rainfall to 20 percent above average since the start of June.
