Hampi gang-rape case: Third accused arrested from Tamil Nadu

The Israeli tourist and the homestay owner were allegedly gang-raped by three men near Sanapur Lake in the Koppal district at around 11 pm on 6 March. The location is less than 30 km away from the popular tourist destination Hampi.

Arrest

Synopsis: The third accused in the case of the alleged gang-rape of a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old local homestay owner in Koppal was arrested from Tamil Nadu. They were allegedly gang-raped by near Sanapur Lake in the Koppal district on 6 March.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Monday, 10 March, that the third accused in the case of the alleged gang-rape of a 27-year-old Israeli tourist and a 29-year-old local homestay owner in Koppal was arrested from Tamil Nadu.

“One person was absconding and was roaming in Tamil Nadu. He has been arrested and will be taken to Bangalore. All three accused are now arrested,” Parameshwara told reporters.

Arrested with Tamil Nadu police assistance

The Koppal police traced the accused, Sai Ram (23), to Tamil Nadu and arrested him with the help of the state police.

The survivors were stargazing with their friends when a group of men on motorcycles demanded ₹100. When they refused, the attackers pushed the men into the canal. Tragically, one of their friends, Bibash from Odisha, drowned, and his body was recovered on 8 March.

Two of their male friends, Daniel from the USA and Pankaj from Maharashtra, managed to escape. Police found blood-stained clothes and a broken guitar at the scene.

Mallesha alias Handi Malla (22) and Chetansai Sillekkyathar (21) were earlier arrested by Gangavati Rural Police. Both are residents of Sai Nagar, Gangavati Taluk.

The incident has raised concerns about tourist safety in the area.
