Heavy rains in Karnataka

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday, 7 July, directed the district heads to survey flood-prone areas in the state.

The survey was expected to assess whether the residents of the concerned areas needed to be relocated temporarily or permanently.

“The deputy commissioners have been directed to start rescue and relief works immediately,” the chief minister told reporters.

Rescue operation

Bommmai added that people in low-lying areas would soon be shifted to safer places.

“The deputy commissioners of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada have been instructed to make alternative housing arrangements for those whose houses have been damaged due to coastal erosion,” he said.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local state officials have been engaged in rescue operations in inundated areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for three coastal districts: Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada.

The Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, and Kodagu districts are under orange alert.

Advisory issued

The IMD has advised fishermen against venturing into the sea.

The met department has also requested tourists to avoid sea beaches in the affected districts.

Citing the red alert from the IMD, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, and Kodagu deputy commissioners have announced a holiday for educational institutions and Aganwadis.

Kodagu deputy commissioner Satheesha BC told South First, “We have initiated relief work and are shifting people staying in lower areas or near the sea to higher ground. We have declared a holiday for educational institutions and Anganwadi centres.”

On 6 July, one person died and three others suffered injuries in a landslide in the Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada. Three people were pulled out from the debris and rushed to a local hospital for medical attention.

According to reports, several rivers in the state are flowing above or nearing the danger levels due to continuous rains.

As per the Central Water Commission (CWC), the Tunga river is flowing above the danger level in the Shivamogga district.
