Synopsis: Former Karnataka police chief Om Prakash has been found dead at his home in Bengaluru, in a suspected case of murder. Police say his body was discovered in a pool of blood with injuries caused by a sharp weapon, and a post-mortem is under way. The 68-year-old had served had served in various top roles in Karnataka until his retirement in 2017.
Former Karnataka Director General and Inspector General of Police Om Prakash has been found dead at his home in Bengaluru, in what police suspect to be a case of murder.
The 68-year-old’s body was discovered on Sunday, 20 April evening in a pool of blood at his residence in HSR Layout.
A sharp weapon was recovered from the scene, and his body has been sent to St John’s Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Prakash’s wife, Pallavi, has been taken into custody for questioning.
“We got this information of death from our control room. Soon, the Hoyasala patrol van has gone near his residence. His body has injuries and a sharp weapon has been recovered from his residence. There was extreme loss of blood,” said Vikash Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police.
Police are currently at the scene collecting evidence. No arrests have been made so far.
“We have asked his son to file a complaint with us after which an FIR will be registered. However, the investigation is still in the preliminary stage and we cannot reveal anything at the moment. No arrests have been done so far and we cannot arrest anybody without complaint and FIR being registered,” ACP Kumar added.
Om Prakash, originally from Bihar, joined the Indian Police Service in 1981 and served as Karnataka’s 38th DGP-IGP until his retirement in 2017.
He began his career as Additional Superintendent of Police in Ballari and held several key positions across the state, including postings in Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada and Chikkamagaluru.
He also served in the Lokayukta, the Fire and Emergency Services, and the CID.
