Expansion of IT exports in India: Telangana’s contribution and growth since 2014

Synopsis: India’s IT industry has seen steady growth, boosting national exports and employment. IT export revenue rose by 11 percent, from ₹8.48 lakh crore in FY 2022-23 to ₹9.43 lakh crore in FY 2023-24. Government initiatives, including the creation of Software Technology Parks and support for FDI, have contributed to this expansion, with significant growth in states like Telangana

India’s Information Technology (IT) industry has been on a steady growth trajectory, significantly contributing to both national exports and employment opportunities.

According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the industry has solidified its position as a global leader.

As highlighted in a recent response to an unstarred question in the Lok Sabha, the government’s continued support has helped to foster substantial growth across the country, including Telangana.

IT exports on the rise

Over the years, India’s IT exports have been on the rise. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology noted that India’s total IT export revenue surged by about 11 percent, from ₹8.48 lakh crore in FY 2022-23 to ₹9.43 lakh crore in FY 2023-24.

This growth has been driven by several initiatives such as the establishment of 67 Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), the allowance for 100 percent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and schemes promoting IT in small towns and cities.

The state of Karnataka remains the front-runner in IT exports, with ₹4.09 lakh crore in 2023-24, followed by Maharashtra at ₹1.83 lakh crore.

Telangana, with its growing IT landscape, reported an impressive ₹1.21 lakh crore in IT exports for the same year, marking its significance as a hub for technology and innovation.

Initiatives fuelling growth

The Indian government has taken several steps to support the IT industry, including the introduction of the National Policy on Software Products (NPSP 2019), skill development programs through the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT), and re-skilling and up-skilling initiatives such as FutureSkills PRIME.

These initiatives are aimed at improving the overall ecosystem for IT professionals and boosting the start-up culture. With programs like TIDE 2.0, the Startup Accelerator SAMRIDH, and the India AI Mission, the government has also made significant strides in promoting innovation.

Furthermore, the Technology Incubation and Development of Entrepreneurs (TIDE 2.0) and Domain-Specific Centres of Excellence (CoEs) have empowered several regions across the country, including Telangana, to embrace technological advancements and foster a robust IT infrastructure.

These policies have not only enhanced the export capacity of the IT sector but also provided a fertile ground for the rise of new ventures.

Telangana’s growth

Telangana’s IT sector, which is mainly driven by Hyderabad, has consistently grown since 2014, establishing itself as one of the major contributors to India’s IT export revenue.

In addition to its ₹1.21 lakh crore worth of IT exports in 2023-24, Telangana has attracted global tech giants, contributing to its position as a preferred destination for IT and innovation.

In comparison, other states such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala have made notable contributions, with Tamil Nadu reaching ₹80,677 crore in IT exports. However, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh reported lower figures, with exports worth ₹6,303 crore and ₹2,850 crore, respectively.
