Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, 18 June, sounded the bugle for the by-election to two vacancies in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council under MLAs’ quota.
The by-election for the two seats has been necessitated following the resignation of one YSRCP member and the disqualification of another.
YSRCP member C Ramachandraiah was disqualified on 11 March and another member Shaik Mohammad Iqbal resigned. They both joined the TDP.
The Legislative Council chairman disqualified Ramachandraiah under the anti-defection law along with another YSRCP MLC Vamsi Krishna Yadav. Yadav had joined the Jana Sena before being disqualified.
Elected in 2021 to the council, both MLCs had their terms until 2027.
The notification for the by-election will be issued on 25 June and it will be held on 12 July.
The last date to file nominations will be on 2 July, scrutiny on 3 July and the last date for withdrawal will be 5 July.
As the TDP alone won 135 seats in the recent Assembly elections, winning the two seats may not pose any problem for it.
The ECI is yet to announce the schedule for filling another vacancy in the Council caused by the disqualification of Yadav.
He was elected to the council from the Local Authorities’ Constituency.
