Hyderabad traffic

In response to the ongoing heavy rains and the subsequent traffic snarls in Hyderabad, the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate has issued a crucial advisory to IT companies, urging them to adopt a work-from-home (WFH) policy and implement staggered logouts until 1 August.

The aim is to ease traffic congestion and ensure the safety of commuters during this challenging monsoon period.

On Wednesday, 26 July, Cyberabad Commissioner of Police (CP) Stephen Raveendra conducted a meeting in collaboration with Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) Secretary General Ramesh Kaza.

Other senior police officials, CEOs, and senior leaders from various industries, including IT, ITeS, pharmaceuticals, hotels, and hospitals also attended the meeting, coming together to brainstorm and find solutions to improve the traffic scenario in Cyberabad.

‘Efforts to ensure safe passage’

During the meeting, Raveendra emphasised the ongoing efforts by the police department to ensure safe passage for commuters during the incessant rains.

A dedicated control room was set up to closely monitor waterlogged areas, and a contingent of 1,800-2,000 personnel, including Traffic and Law & Order police, were deployed to manage the traffic situation effectively.

Additionally, real-time traffic updates were shared through channels, such as X (previously Twitter), electronic display boards, and WhatsApp, to keep the public informed and to offer alternative routes during traffic disruptions.

The police said that the response from the industries to the staggered logout advisory was highly positive, leading to a visible reduction in congestion on 25 July.

Encourage public transport

Encouraging carpooling and the utilisation of public transport — particularly the metro — were among the suggestions to further alleviate road congestion during this challenging period.

Traffic DCP Harshavardhan provided a detailed explanation behind the rationale for the phased logout timings, and urged the industry to adhere to this practice until the monsoon situation improved significantly.

This collaborative approach between the authorities and the private sector was envisioned to pave the way for better traffic management and enhanced safety during the challenging monsoon season in Cyberabad.

Contact numbers were also made available to the public, encouraging them to lend their support by reporting vehicle breakdowns and volunteering as traffic guides.
