Synopsis: The Karnataka police registered a suo motu case against unknown individuals after a video of government workers mercilessly beating stray dogs went viral on social media.
Under instructions to catch a rabid stray dog that had bitten children in the Mannaekhalli village in Karnataka’s Bidar, government workers went about mercilessly beating stray dogs.
The video of the incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, 6 August, was caught on camera and went viral on social media. This led the police to register a suo motu case, but against unidentified people, even though they can be identified from the video.
Under the pretext of administering anti-rabies injections, several stray dogs were mercilessly beaten. The incident occurred during a joint operation by the Gram Panchayat and the Department of Animal Husbandry.
Stray dogs were beaten with sticks in the middle of the road. Even though the strays were howling in pain, the perpetrators did not stop.
After the video of stray dogs being beaten went viral, Mannaekhalli police registered a suo motu case on Tuesday, 12 August, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 (U/s-11 (1)(a).
A rabid dog attacked about five children who were playing in front of their houses in Mannaekhelli, Chitaguppa taluk, a few days before 6 August. They were then rushed to a local hospital and administered preliminary treatment. Subsequently, the children were shifted to the Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS).
It is being alleged that BRIMS hospital did not have anti-rabies vaccines when the children were brought in.
