Crime by foreigners in India 17 times more than those against them, opposite trend in southern states

Astonishingly, in 2021, criminal offences against foreigners has spiked in the southern states of the country in comparison to 2020.

The NCRB data reveals that foreign nationals have been booked for murder, attempt to murder, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder, hurt, human trafficking, rape, arms act, theft, robbery, cheating, forgery and others.

The 2021 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, released on Sunday, 28 August, revealed that crimes committed by people from other nations in the country are 17 times more than offences against them, if one were to go by the number of cases registered.

However, the crime rate against foreigners spiked in the southern states in 2021 in comparison to 2020, going by the number of registered criminal cases.

Crime against and by foreigners

The NCRB report on crimes reported in 2021 stated that criminal activities by foreigners increased by 30 percent compared to 2020, while crimes against them decreased by 70 percent compared to 2019.

According to the NCRB data, 404 criminal acts were carried out against foreign nationals in the country were reported in 2019, but the numbers came down to 150 in 2021. Meanwhile, criminal cases registered against foreigners rose to 2,585 in 2021 from 1,937 in 2020.

The data revealed that foreign nationals were booked for murder, attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, hurt, human trafficking, rape, arms act, theft, robbery, cheating, and forgery, among other crimes.

According to the data, people hailing from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Iran, Russia, the US, European countries, and Nigeria were booked for various criminal acts.

The NCRB data revealed that 15 foreign nationalists were accused of rape, eight of murder, 318 of narcotics, 109 were booked under the arms act, and four were booked under the POCSO Act, which deals with crimes against children.

Incidentally, an analysis of the crime-wise breakup of 2021 revealed a narrower gap when serious crimes were compared.

According to the NCRB data, nine foreigners were murdered, 14 were raped, eight were human trafficked, and three were abducted.

Crime by foreigners in South India

In the southern states of the country — Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala — a total of 364 crimes were committed by foreign nationals in 2021.

According to the NCRB, Karnataka reported 229 crimes by foreigners, followed by Tamil Nadu (79), Telangana (40), Kerala (13) and Andhra Pradesh (three).

However, on analysing the data one finds that criminal activities in 2021 by foreigners decreased in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu compared to 2020.

Crime against foreigners in South India

The NCRB data revealed that in 2021, a total of 73 cases were reported in police stations across South India, while 61 cases were reported in 2020.

The spike in cases in 2021 compared to 2020 was reported in Karnataka, Telangana, and Kerala, while cases involving crimes against foreigners decreased by 45 percent in Tamil Nadu.
