In a significant development marking the culmination of an ongoing conflict, the CPI(M) in Kerala announced on Friday, 27 September, that it is officially severing all ties with independent MLA PV Anvar.

The announcement, made by CPI(M) State Secretary MV Govindan at a press meet in New Delhi’s Kerala House, underscored the widening rift between the party and Nilambur MLA Anvar, who has recently been vocal in his criticism of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the state government.

Govindan declared that Anvar would no longer have any connections with the CPI(M) and further urged party members, supporters, and well-wishers to actively counter Anvar’s allegations, which he described as a “propaganda” campaign against the party.

“Anvar himself had announced that he would not attend the CPI(M) parliamentary party meeting and is not part of the LDF. As he is not a party member, there is no scope for any kind of action against him. But the party would like to make it clear that it will not have any connections with him anymore,” Govindan stated.

CPI(M) distances itself

The fallout between Anvar and the CPI(M) escalated after Anvar’s press conference on Thurday, characterised as crossing “all limits of internal discipline” by Govindan.

He criticised Anvar for his refusal to engage constructively with the party and the government, despite ongoing efforts to address his grievances.

“The complaints raised by him were being considered by the party and the government. In fact, inquiries had already begun into some of his complaints. Yet he continued to malign the party and government,” Govindan remarked.

He added that a face-to-face meeting had been scheduled with Anvar for 3 October but the MLA preemptively distanced himself from the party.

In a scathing critique, Govindan accused Anvar of being ignorant about the party’s principles and operational style, likening his allegations to those made by “right-wing forces and certain media outlets desperate to tarnish the image of the Left government.”

Speculation on future

Despite the CPI(M)’s efforts to address Anvar’s concerns, including a patient hearing and assurances of inquiry, Govindan lamented that Anvar continued to escalate his public attacks against the party.

When asked whether Anvar would return to the Congress party, Govindan suggested that Anvar had cleared the path for such a move, citing the MLA’s recent remarks about Rahul Gandhi.

In his last press meet, Anvar, while responding to a controversial remark about Rahul Gandhi, expressed “great respect for the Nehru family” and reflected on his family’s historical ties with the Congress — comments that Govindan interpreted as a potential indication of Anvar’s next political move.

The CPI(M)’s decision to sever ties with Anvar, an independent legislator who had been aligned with the LDF marks a significant moment in the state’s political landscape and it also raises questions about Anvar’s political future, as speculations about his next steps continue to swirl.
