Continuous rainfall expected in most parts of South India as southwest monsoon intensifies

Synopsis: The IMD forecast intense rainfall across Kerala and Lakshadweep, driven by a cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, along with a trough extending toward coastal Karnataka.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, 13 June, forecast intense rainfall across Kerala and Lakshadweep over the coming days, driven by a cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, along with a trough extending toward coastal Karnataka.

Strong westerly winds in the lower atmosphere are further enhancing the wet spell. According to IMD alerts, several northern districts of Kerala, including Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod, and Malappuram, are likely to witness very heavy rainfall, with red warnings in place from 14 to 16 June. The IMD also indicated the likelihood of over 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours.

Central and southern districts such as Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kottayam fall under orange and yellow alerts on various days.

Lakshadweep is also expected to receive moderate to heavy rain, particularly under yellow alerts. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and follow weather-related advisories.

The department has warned of flash floods, waterlogging in urban and low-lying areas, and landslides, especially in hilly terrains. Authorities have urged residents in landslide-prone and flood-hit regions to relocate to safer places during daylight hours.

Those in low-lying areas are advised to move to relief camps if necessary. People living in structurally weak houses, particularly with unstable roofs, are asked to remain vigilant.

The public is strictly warned against crossing rivers, bathing in water bodies, fishing, or visiting waterfalls and hilly areas until the alerts are withdrawn.

Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel, exercise caution on roads near water bodies and under repair, and promptly report dangerous situations like fallen trees or unstable structures to authorities.

Rainfall expected in South India

The IMD, in its press release, said the southwest monsoon is likely to advance over the remaining parts of central and eastern India and some parts of northwest India during 12 to 18 June and most parts of northwest India during 19 to 25 June.

It said light or moderate rainfall is expected at most places over Kerala, Mahe, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep during the next seven days. Light or moderate rainfall is expected at many places accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-50 kmph over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe on Friday, and coastal Karnataka, Telangana till 16 June.

It added that strong surface winds (50-60 kmph) are very likely over Kerala and Mahe from 14 to 16 June, interior Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh till 16 June.

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Lakshadweep on 14 and 15 June, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana till 18 June, and Rayalaseema on Friday. Very heavy rainfall is expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till 17 June, Kerala, Mahe and Karnataka till 18 June.

Extremely heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on 14 and 15 June, Kerala and Mahe from 14 to 17 June, and coastal and south interior Karnataka till 16 June.
