Congress leaders, on Saturday, 16 December, criticised the government over the security breach in the Parliament and demanded the Union government pay attention to the incident.

Former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi attributed rising prices and unemployment behind the 13 December Parliament security breach.

Meanwhile, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Opposition was demanding a statement from the government regarding it and they were not issuing it.

‘Biggest issue is unemployment’

Speaking to reporters after a poll preparedness meeting with leaders of the Congress’ Gujarat unit in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said the “biggest issue in the country is that of unemployment”.

He said that the reason behind the security breach in Parliament is that youngsters “are not getting employment due to the policies of (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi”.

“There has been a security breach in Parliament. But why did it happen?” he asked.

“The biggest issue in the country is that of unemployment, which is boiling all over the country. The country’s youth are not getting employment due to the policies of Modi ji,” he said.

“The breach has happened (in Parliament) but the reason behind it is unemployment and price rise,” Gandhi also said.

Criticises HM for not addressing the issue

Kharge said that the Opposition insisted the Union Home Minister attend the proceedings at the House to brief it, but he did not come.

He said: “It is a serious issue and the government should pay attention to it. We are repeatedly saying in the Parliament that the Union home minister should come to the House and give a statement but he did not want to come.”

“They (BJP) are not ready to let the House function. This is not a good thing for democracy but there is no point in talking to people who do not believe in democracy. They (BJP) seek votes by taking the name of Congress and abusing Nehru-Gandhi. Their job is to abuse us and get votes…,” he told the media.

In a major security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack on Wednesday, two men jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, released yellow smoke from canisters and shouted slogans, before being overpowered by the MPs.

Two men — Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D — had jumped into the Lok Sabha’s chamber. Around the same time, two others — Amol Shinde and Neelam Devi — released coloured smoke from canisters while shouting “tanashahi nahi chalegi” outside the Parliament premises.

Lalit Jha, the fifth accused and the “mastermind” according to the police, allegedly circulated videos of the protest outside the complex on social media. All five have been arrested.

The Opposition has been seeking answers from the government on the security breach and has demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue in Parliament. They have also been disrupting proceedings in both Houses to press for the demand.
