Synopsis: Maddur in the Mandya district of Karnataka is returning to normalcy after a tense situation prevailed there following the stone pelting incident during the Ganesha idol immersion procession. Meanwhile, Hindu organisations are preparing for a mass Ganesha Visarjan in Maddur on Wednesday.
Maddur in the Mandya district of Karnataka is returning to normalcy after a tense situation prevailed there following the stone pelting incident during the Ganesha idol immersion procession on the evening of 7 September. Police said 22 people have been arrested in connection with the case.
Following the incident, several Hindu organisations jointly announced a bandh in Maddur on Wednesday, 9 September. A huge force of police personnel is present in Maddur to prevent any untoward incidents.
Meanwhile, Hindu organisations are preparing for a mass Ganesha Visarjan in Maddur on Wednesday. The procession is expected to have around 25 Ganesha idols, which will be immersed at a lake in Maddur.
The procession will be inaugurated by BJP Karnataka President and MLA BY Vijayendra.
“An incident of stone pelting happened during the procession on the evening of 7 September. We have done an elaborate bandobast. The situation was quickly brought under control. Yesterday (Tuesday), there was a march by certain organisations. They have called for a bandh today, and we have sufficient deployment in all those areas in Maddur,” Inspector General of Police (IGP) Southern Range MB Boralingaiah said.
The state police have deployed five Superintendents of Police (SPs), four Additional SPs, 10 Deputy SPs, 30 Inspectors, 32 Sub-inspectors, 600 Civil Head Constables and Constables, in addition to 15 Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) platoons and 10 DR platoons.
The IGP said that he district administration is holding a Peace Committee meeting on Wednesday afternoon. The route for the procession will be finalised after Wednesday’s meeting.
“As of now, we are verifying the evidence that is available. We have arrested around 22 people, where we have very clear evidence of pelting stones and other objects. However, if there is any deeper conspiracy, we will need some more time to analyse and take further action,” he added.
The IGP further said the police could not identify any stone pelting specifically from the mosque. “We were not able to find anything like that. Stones were pelted from near the mosque,” he said, adding that two or three people among the arrested are under the age of 18.
He said that two separate FIRs have been registered in connection with Monday’s protest march, one for burning a Muslim flag and removing buntings erected for Eid Milad, and another for stone pelting on buildings and attempting to enter the mosque.
FIRs have also been registered for obstructing the police and assaulting them.
“In all, an FIR has been registered against 500 persons under sections 189(2), 189(4), 121, 121(2) and 190 of BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita) at Maddur Police Station,” he said.
BJP leader and former Somanahalli Zilla Praishad President Boraiah said such incidents shouldn’t happen during Ganesha visarjan. “A Ganesha idol immersion procession is planned on Wednesday. BJP leaders, including Ashwath Narayan, Nikhil Kumaraswamy, CT Ravi, R Ashoka, BY Vijayendra, C Narayanaswamy, are also planning to be there.”
“The exact details of the incident (on Sunday night) are not yet correctly known. A Ganesha idol immersion procession was being held near Ram Rahim Nagar. Once the procession reached the masjid, stones were pelted. The police have proven this and made arrests according to the law. A total of 50 Hindus have been arrested, some of them belong to the BJP and JD(S) as well. 25 people from other communities have also been arrested,” he added.
