BSP leader Usha Dasari's father Dasari Hanmaiah was assaulted by BJP leader Dheeraj Reddy on 7 December

The father of Telangana BSP leader Usha Dasari was allegedly beaten up at a BJP office for seeking the dues owed to him.

Dasari Hanmaiah, who was assaulted by RK Puram Corporator Radha Dheeraj Reddy’s husband Dheeraj Reddy, suffered injuries and has been hospitalised since 7 December. His condition is stable.

Hanmaiah went to the BJP office at RK Puram seeking the payment of ₹32 lakh from Dheeraj Reddy for undertaking the work of Package-7 of the Sitarama Lift Irrigation Project. He did this work for Swetharkkaar Construction, which is owned by Dheeraj Reddy.

Pre-planned attack, says Usha

“My father is a contractor. Due to some financial constraints, he was demanding the payment,” Usha said. “On 7 December, they (Dheeraj Reddy) called him to the RK Puram BJP office to collect the dues,” she told South First

She revealed that her father went to the office along with four other associates. However, he was reportedly made to meet Dheeraj Reddy alone. “As soon as my father sat down, multiple people entered the room and started assaulting him. They beat him ruthlessly, making him bleed from the nose and the mouth. They even used casteist slurs against him,” Usha claimed.

“I was out of town that day and returned on the morning of 8 December. My father told me what happened while in the hospital. He bled to the point that an unidentified medical professional had to come in and clean my father’s wounds to stop the bleeding,” she revealed.

“They took his driver to a local Ramraj store to buy him a change of clothes. However, the extent of my father’s injuries was so grievous that even the new white shirt was bloodied from his wounds,” she recounted.

Usha said the assault was pre-planned.

Police blamed

“The police seemed hesitant to file the FIR against Dheeraj Reddy. Instead of addressing my father’s injuries they pointedly asked why my father went there in the first place,” Usha said.

She added that the police started taking the complaint seriously once BRS leader RS Praveen Kumar lent her his support. Kumar is a former member of the BSP.

The police have filed the FIR at the Chaitanyapuri Police Station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 127(2), for wrongful confinement, and Section 115(2), causing hurt voluntarily.

These two sections were read with Section 3(1) of the SCST Prevention of Atrocities Act which specifies punishments for atrocities committed by people outside the SC and ST communities.

As per the FIR, the dispute began with Dheeraj Reddy hurling casteist slurs at one of his associates. This escalated into a physical fight and Dheeraj Reddy and his associates assaulted Hanmaiah.

Usha also revealed that while Dheeraj Reddy was presented before a magistrate at 7 pm on 9 December, he was set free as the police stated they needed further investigation. “Even the charges they’re levelling against Dheeraj seem to favour him. Despite calling in witnesses, they did not record their statements regarding the incident. They simply took their details and left,” she reported.

She also lamented that Dheeraj Reddy and his associates were seated in an air-conditioned room and treated to refreshments while they were demanding justice in the scorching heat.

“Even the ADCP Koteshwarulu ridiculed me for asking for an update regarding the case, telling me that he can do what he wants to,” she said.

Speaking to South First Chaitanyapuri Police Station, SHO G Venkateshwara Rao said three people have been arrested. “While we made the arrests, the ACP is further investigating Dheeraj Reddy’s role,” he said, confirming that he is free for the next 45 days.

Meanwhile, Dheeraj Reddy denied the Usha’s allegations and blamed Hanmaiah. Dheeraj accused him of encroaching upon the lands of minorities.
