In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded early on Sunday, 19 November, a 23-year-old woman named Soundarya and her nine-month-old daughter Suviksha were electrocuted near Hopefarm junction in Bangalore City.
The mother and child had just arrived from Tamil Nadu and were walking home when she accidentally stepped on an unattended live wire on the pavement. They are said to have died on the spot.
In the wake of this devastating event, a case of negligence was registered against Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) officials at the Kadugodi Police Station.
The police subsequently detained three BESCOM engineers in connection with the case.
Despite DCP (Whitefield) Shivakumar Gunare assuring stringent action, netizens continued to criticise the negligence of the BESCOM officials and demanded justice for the victims.

The police said: “The incident occurred as Soundarya was returning home with her husband and child. Residing in Bengaluru’s AK Gopal Colony.”
They added: “Soundarya and her husband arrived in the city from Tamil Nadu on Sunday. Upon deboarding the bus, the couple, accompanied by their nine-month-old toddler, began walking home. Tragically, they failed to notice the broken wire on the road, and Soundarya stepped on it.”
It was around 6 am, said the DCP, and still dark around.
The police also said: “The mortal remains of both the victims were taken to hospital for further procedures,” added police.
Acting on the complaint from the victim’s husband Santosh Kumar, the cops registered a case under IPC Section 304(A) (causing death by negligence) at the Kadugodi Police Station.
Assistant Engineer Chetan, Junior Engineer Rajanna, and BESCOM station operator Manju have since been detained and are currently undergoing interrogation.
The netizens venting anguish on the BESCOM officials, demanded the Bengaluru City Police to take stringent action for the negligence.
